The Son I Left Behind Called Me Mommy Chapter 07

The Son I Left Behind Called Me Mommy Chapter 07

On my first day of work, I didn’t have a nanny yet, so I had to

bring Coop to the office

He was an angel, sitting on the rug and playing with Legos

My colleagues were floored when they found out he was

mine

He’s so big! You don’t look like you’ve even had a kid.”

I’m so jealous,one girl sighed. I wish I could have a kid

that cute.”

Hearing the compliment, Coop looked up from his toys.

Thanks, Auntie! You’re really pretty too!”

He had them wrapped around his finger instantly. They

showered him with snacks all day

As the clock ticked toward five, a text from Callan popped

  1. up

[Still at the office?

[Yeah.] I typed back. [Coop is with me.

Callan: [Okay. I’ll pick you up.

Rush hour in Oakhaven was a nightmare

When I stepped out of the lobby, I saw Callan leaning against

his Cadillac Escalade

Daddy!Coop waved

Callan looked up, but his eyes weren’t on Coop. They were

on me

For a split second, the air between us changed

Callan took Coop from my arms

He glanced at my shoulder. Long day?”

I shook my head. I’m alright.”

He bounced Coop in his arms. No more junk food today, you

hear me?”

Coop ducked his head into Callan’s neck, secretly winking at

  1. me

Callan caught us. You too, Maya. No feeding him trash.”

I tried to hide the bag of snacks my coworkers had bought

behind my back. Me? Never.”

I shrugged at Coop. My hands are tied, kid

He slumped against Callan’s shoulder like a deflated balloon

Since Coop had school, he couldn’t stay at my loft

permanently

Callan was taking him back to the estate tonight

On the way back, Callan swung the Escalade into a grocery

store parking lot

We’re out of food at the house.”

He deftly popped Coop into a shopping cart and pushed him

toward the produce

I followed quietly behind them

Watching them together, we looked like a real family. It

wasn’t a bad feeling

Halfway through, we ran into a neighbor

The man looked at me, then at Callan. And who is this?”

Callan said calmly. This is Maya. Cooper’s mother.”

Coop started bragging immediately. Look! This is my Mommy! Isn’t she beautiful?!”

I rubbed the back of his head, blushing

The neighbor seemed to catch the vibe

He grinned at Callan. Sounds like I should expect an invitation soon?”

I opened my mouth to correct him, but Callan beat me to it

Soon. I’ll let you know when we have a date.”

I spent the rest of the trip in a daze, wondering what the hell that meant

After dinner, Callan sent Coop upstairs to bed

Coop, sensing the shift in the air, didn’t argue

Callan walked over to me, his presence looming. A word?”

I nodded. I had questions too

The lights in the study were off

The moment the door clicked shut, he pinned me against

the wood

Callan kissed me hard

It wasn’t a gentle reunion

It was a desperate, hungry collision, like he was pouring

years of suppressed rage and longing into me at once

MmI gasped, the sting of his teeth hitting my lip

In the dark, I felt something wet hit my shoulder. A tear

Maya,Callan choked out, his voice breaking. You’re

heartless. You really are.”

The words pierced me. I fought to keep my own tears back

I’m sorry”

Callan cupped my face with both hands. Don’t. Don’t say

that.”

In the pitchblack room, we couldn’t see each other, but the

heat of his gaze was unmistakable

It was my fault. I didn’t do enough.”

No,I interrupted. You’ve been amazing. You raised Coop to

be such a good boy.”

Callan shook his head

No. If I had been good enough, I would have given you the

security you needed back then.”

I went cold. You know?”

My mother told me,he whispered. He took a shaky breath

If I had just been honest with you soonerwould things be

different?”

Years had passed. I wasn’t that fragile girl anymore.

I was young and immature too, Callan. It wasn’t just you.”

He leaned his forehead against mine, his nose brushing mine

in the dark

We were both too young,he sighed. We thought we had

to win or lose. We forgot we were supposed to be on the

same side.”

Maya, give yourself a chance. Give us a chance.”

Give me a chance to make this right.
