My mother, Catherine, who had just come downstairs, stopped in her tracks.

Everyone stared at me.

Only the fire in the hearth continued to crackle.

A few seconds later, my mother rushed over and grabbed my arm.

“Chloe, what are you saying?” Even her voice had changed. “Your father is just angry. Why would you say that about yourself? You are a Davis.”

She tried to pull me closer, but I didn’t budge.

“Chloe is earning money through her own hard work. She hasn’t broken any laws. What did she do wrong?”

“I went to so much trouble to bring her home, not so you could treat her like this!”

My father was clearly stunned by my mother’s sudden outburst.
