“Now all of Washington is gossiping that the Davis family can’t even provide for their own biological daughter, forcing her to tutor LSAT students at Columbia for pocket money!” My father pointed at me, his anger mounting. “She has utterly humiliated this family!”

He glared at me.

“Is the money in your trust not enough? Why did you have to take on that kind of side job at school, giving people something to talk about?”

I cut in.

“The trust documents state that my annual education budget is subject to review. But that review has never been conducted.”

“What do you mean, never conducted? You dare talk back—”

My father’s words died in his throat.

He had been about to call me a liar again.

But my mother’s sobs had stopped.

She slowly released my arm and looked at him.

My father froze.

“I thought you had your assistant follow up.”
