Ethan quickly pulled her tightly into his arms to calm her 

down. 

I looked straight at Ethan. “Take her away at once.” 

Vera wept bitterly in his embrace as she was led out of my office. 

Moments later, Ethan returned alone. 

“Cleo, I…” He looked visibly uneasy. “I only came here to say this… I’m truly sorry.” 

“Mm–hmm.” I replied indifferently, continuing to sort through official documents. 

He waited silently for a longer reply that never came, sighed softly, glanced at me one last time, and left. 

Shortly afterward, my mother’s condition took another sharp 

turn for the worse. 

She begged repeatedly for me to visit her bedside. 

I went to see her. She had wasted away drastically, yet still 

clutched my hand weakly. 

“Ivy… Can you… can you let your younger sister go? I know I 

was wrong… please forgive me.” 

Even on her deathbed, her final thoughts were still all about 

Vera. 

I leaned down beside her bed. “I cannot. I will never let her off 

easily. I will return every ounce of pain she once inflicted on 

me, even tenfold.” 

Her hands trembled violently. “Is there truly no way to make amends?” 

“There isn’t.” 

“Please, I beg you…” 

“I can’t.” 

She let out a weary sigh, closed her eyes, and two streams of silent tears slid down her cheeks. “It’s all my fault. If I had treated you better back then, would you not harbor such deep hatred now? I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” 

I gently tucked her hands beneath the blanket and turned to 

leave the ward. 

As soon as I stepped out of the hospital gates, I saw Theo 

standing there. 

The always meticulous and polished young man looked utterly disheveled, not even bothering to shave his beard. 

“Mom… I’ve called off the engagement.” 

“That is your own business.” 

He hurried forward to catch up with me. “I truly know I was wrong now, Mom. Please forgive me. I never truly wanted to cut ties with you…” 

“Didn’t I warn you from the very start?” I turned to face him sternly. “Words spoken are like water spilled on the ground. You must always think carefully before acting.” 

He froze stiffly in place. 

“Every choice you make comes with inevitable 

consequences.” 

“Mom…” 

“Don’t call me that anymore. I haven’t been your mother for a long time.” 

Nathan’s car pulled up beside the road. Theo looked at him with teary eyes. “Dad… can you please persuade Mom to forgive me?” 

Nathan smiled faintly. “I’m afraid I can’t. I always listen to her in our family.” 

Riding home in the car, I teased him playfully. “What about 

outside the house?” 

“I make the big decisions, and she makes the small ones. But she gets to decide which matters count as big or small.” 

I laughed heartily. “I still wonder how I ever fell for your smooth–talking ways back then.” 

“Because we were always destined to be together.” 

“You know what? Your glib tongue was exactly why I once thought you were completely unreliable.” 

He looked surprised. 

Leaning back in the passenger seat, I glanced over at him. “That’s why I only ever saw you as a casual fling at first.” 

“Is that so? You had your fun and left me alone to raise our 

children all these years, only visiting us occasionally every month. How could you be so heartless?” 

“I took good care of all our children equally even when I 

stayed overseas alone with one of them!” 

“All you ever cared about were the kids. It took you twenty whole years to finally spare a thought for me.” 

I fell silent, knowing he spoke the truth. I resolved to make it up to him properly from then on. 

Before long, Ethan and Vera’s family faded completely from elite social circles. 

I had promised to repay every wrong done to me tenfold, and I kept my word. 

They accused me of being vengeful, so I let them witness my resolve firsthand. 

Julian attended my wedding ceremony with Nathan. 

Staring at me dressed in a white wedding gown, he wore a bitter smile. “If only I had mustered up the courage to propose to you twenty years ago.” 

“I still would have turned you down.” 

I had never held any romantic feelings for him at all; he was nothing more than a stranger in my life. 

He smiled bitterly once more, raised his glass in a toast toward me, and after that, I never heard any news of him ever again. 

I never bothered to seek him out either. 

After enduring twenty years of ups and downs, I finally found 

peace, free from all sorrows and worldly troubles.
