Beatrice’s knees buckled. “I don’t know anything! She faked it! That’s not my voice. I never touched her.”

Mom grabbed the phone. Played it again. And again.

Tears streamed down her face.

Beatrice kept scrambling. “Luna, please. She’s setting me up. This whole day was a trap. She wanted to frame me.”

Lucien’s hand cracked across her face. “You’re a servant. She was a princess. Why would she bother?”

“You think she predicted yesterday? Planned all of this? Are you listening to yourself?”

Mom started shaking. Uncontrollably. “My baby. Where is my baby?”

Dad’s voice broke. “The morgue. Could she really be…?”

Mom wailed. Lucien collapsed onto the couch.

Dad grabbed his keys. “We’re going to the hospital. Now.”

Calyra clutched her head. “Ah! My head. It’s splitting. I can’t…”

No one looked at her.

Even Kellan stood frozen.

Calyra dropped. No one caught her.

She hit the floor with a meaty thud. A real yelp escaped her throat.

‘I can’t breathe. I can’t…”

Lucien snatched the car keys. “Kellan, take Calyra. Mom, Dad. We’re finding Veyra.”

Kellan hesitated. Then he scooped Calyra up.

Lucien drove. Pedal to the floor.

He hit the ER doors running. “Veyra Nightwind! Where is my sister?”

The nurse flinched. “Let me check. One moment.”

“Veyra Nightwind. I’m sorry. She didn’t survive. Her remains are in the morgue. Follow me.”

The word ‘remains’ hit Mom like a freight train. Dad had to hold her upright.

Lucien’s eyes were bloodshot. Murmuring. “Not real. Not real.”

The morgue door opened.

They saw me.

Mom shattered. Clung to my cold body. “My daughter! Veyra! How could you leave me?”

Lucien’s tears fell hot. “It’s really you. Why? Why would you do this?”

Dad’s eyes were red. His voice rough. “Veyra. Gone. Just gone.”

Kellan burst through the doors. Calyra behind him.

He stared at my corpse. Mouth working. Nothing came out.

Then, barely a whisper. “Veyra. You idiot. You stupid, stupid…”

Lucien’s fist connected with Kellan’s nose. Cartilage crunched. Blood poured.

“You killed her! That bet. With your stupid friends. You played her. You broke her. She’s dead because of you.”

“All my fault? You knew. The whole time. I chased her. You watched. You never said a word. Not once.”

“And what about you? All of you. You iced her out. Called her a liar. You think she jumped just for me? She had no one.

No one. That’s on you.”

Calyra wedged herself between them. “Lucien. She made her choice. We can’t save someone who doesn’t want saving.”

Lucien’s eyes snapped to her. “You’re right. You can’t save someone who wants to die.”

“So explain it to me. You’ve tried to kill yourself a hundred times. We’ve saved you every single one. How does that work?”

Calyra’s mouth opened. Nothing came out.

“Because you love me. You watch me. You catch it. Every single time I start to slip.”

Lucien took a long breath. Said nothing else.

“Let’s cremate her. Let her rest.”

“No. I’m getting the best healers. I’m going to fix her.”

‘Lucien. She’s gone.”

“She’s just sleeping. We have money. Resources. Connections. I’ll find someone. Something. I’ll bring her back.”
