The One He Let Go Chapter 06

The One He Let Go Chapter 06

These past few days,
Caspian had been helping Isabella move.
He did everything himself.
He hadn’t been home.
So he naturally didn’t know I’d moved out.
The moment our eyes met,
A flicker of impatience crossed his face.
“What are you doing here?”
Caspian seemed to remember Isabella’s accusation just now.
He looked at me with wary, guarded eyes, and warned, “Don’t tell me you’re here to ask me to fire Isabella?”
I forced down my anger.
And tried to act casual, shoving the stack of contracts into his arms.
“These contracts need to be renewed.”
“You handled them last year too, so—”
“Got it.” Caspian took them coldly.
He signed as he muttered under his breath:
“You could have handled this little thing yourself.”

“You had to come find me during work hours—”

“Are you that dependent on me?”

With that,

He let out a cold laugh, and handed me back all the signed documents.

“If you wanted to see me, just say so. Using an excuse like this is childish.”

“Oh, right—”

Caspian cleared his throat a little awkwardly, looked away, and said hoarsely:

“There’s some office gossip that’s really hurting Isabella. The only way to fix it is for us to fake a divorce, to prove she’s not what everyone’s making her out to be.”

“Don’t worry, once the dust settles, I’ll marry you again immediately. And I’ll find the right time to make our relationship public.”

“Going public with our marriage was your dream, right? You’ll agree to this, won’t you?”

I kept my eyes down.

My body was trembling slightly from the effort of hiding my emotions.

But in Caspian’s eyes, it looked like I was about to cry.

He suddenly softened, “Mia, don’t be like this—”

“It’ll only take a month, tops, and we can get the license again.”

I didn’t dare to wait any longer. I just said “Okay” and hurried downstairs.

Afraid I might change my mind.

Isabella pushed Caspian to go file for the divorce that very afternoon.

When we parted ways,

Caspian looked at me and said, “Once I’ve handled the gossip, I’ll come home to you.”

I paused for a moment, but I didn’t look back.

Caspian, there won’t be a chance.

Tonight,

I’m leaving New York.

Watching Mia’s retreating back,

Caspian suddenly felt a strange unease in his heart—

She was always so obedient.

But whenever it came to Isabella, she’d bristle like an angry cat.

But this time was different.

She was actually okay with him being with Isabella.

Before he knew it,

Caspian took a step forward, about to call out to Mia.

“Caspian.” Isabella tugged at his sleeve, pouting, “If you go after her now, it’ll all be for nothing…
“Then what about me?”

Looking at Isabella’s tear-streaked face,
Caspian let out a soft sigh.
He tried to reassure himself,
Mia must have agreed because he’d promised to go public with their marriage after the fake divorce.
Once the gossip died down,
He’d find a way to transfer Isabella out.
And get everything set up.
Then he’d finally tell the world that Mia was his wife.
So,
Caspian and Isabella stood there together.
And watched as Mia got into a car with nothing but a small backpack.
He didn’t think much more of it.
Caspian saw Isabella’s mood start to lift beside him, and he let out a relieved breath as well.
That afternoon,
Caspian took some time to go downstairs and see if Isabella was being treated unfairly.

That’s when he overheard Isabella saying arrogantly to the others:

“Caspian and I have been together since we were nineteen. Eight years. If I hadn’t gotten a little bored and broken it off, we’d still be together.”

“Gossiping about me behind my back? How stupid can you get? Can’t you see how he treats me?”

“If he really had a wife, wouldn’t she have come out and said something by now?”

Surprisingly, the people she was badmouthing so viciously didn’t even try to defend themselves. They just exchanged meaningful glances and walked away.

Caspian stood there, frozen.

After a long, long time,

He grabbed a cleaner at random and asked, “Do Isabella and I look like a couple?”

The cleaner looked at him like he was crazy.

“Don’t you two look like one?”

“Even if you’re not, it’s only a matter of time before you get engaged or married.”

Caspian suddenly remembered Isabella’s suspicion that Mia had leaked the news just to force him to go public.

He asked again,

“Then what about me and Mia?”

The cleaner laughed like she’d just heard the joke of the century.
