The One He Let Go Chapter 02

The One He Let Go Chapter 02

I thought back to how, no matter how much I kicked up a fuss in the past, Caspian would just brush it off with a flippant, “That’s all in the past, you’re my legal wife now.”

Then I thought about the transfer contract.

I dug my nails into my palm and forced myself to stay calm, saying, “I’ll wait for you. After all, we still need to have a proper talk about the divorce.”

In response, there was only a long, heavy silence.

I looked up and saw that Caspian had already left with Isabella.

I could only faintly hear Isabella’s playful laugh:

“Didn’t peg your wife for such a drama queen.”

“Seriously, looking at her like that, doesn’t it tug at your heartstrings?”

Caspian’s expression was cold, unreadable.

“I’ve explained it a million times—”

“We broke up because we fell out of love, it was amicable. There’s zero chance of us getting back together.”

“I don’t know what she’s getting so worked up about.”

The rest of his words were swallowed by the closing elevator doors.

I let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh.

The marriage I once thought was perfect turned out to be a joke.

I didn’t hesitate any longer.

I went back to my desk.

And neatly signed my name on the transfer contract.

Looking on the bright side,

Even though Savannah was a thousand miles away, it was much closer to home.

I’d finally have time to spend with my parents.

The rain was coming down hard.

Caspian had arranged a driver.

But the car was parked far away.

Because he’d said he was worried that making our marriage public would invite gossip that would hurt me.

After all, I was just a country girl who’d clawed her way from a small town in Savannah to the financial heart of New York.

To these high-society types, I only had a pretty face going for me.

I was hardly the kind of person you’d picture sharing a home with a blue-blood like Caspian.

“Mr. Drusus hired a chef—”

“From that restaurant in Italy you said was delicious. Mr. Drusus brought the whole culinary team back.”

The driver pulled over and reminded me,

“Enjoy your meal. The new Hermès bags will be delivered shortly.”

I paused.

A wave of deep helplessness washed over me—

He’s always like this.

Acts like he’s so good to me.

And yet, acts like he’s so terrible.

Just as I was spacing out,

Caspian’s phone call came through.

When I answered,

I realized it was probably a pocket dial.

On the other end, someone was sighing, saying regretfully:

“Caspian, seeing you and Isabella together now, I still feel a bit bummed out.”

“You two were so good together back then. Eight years, man, how many eight-year stretches do you get in a lifetime? And you just called it quits.”

“You know, when you married that Amelia Foster, we told Isabella that if she wanted to crash the wedding, we’d have her back, no questions asked.”

My breath hitched.

So, the hostility I felt from Caspian’s circle wasn’t just my paranoid imagination—

They really never did like me.

Then, I heard Caspian let out a helpless chuckle.
