The One He Let Go Chapter 04

The One He Let Go Chapter 04

Isabella was surrounded by people in the middle.

Just as she was blushing and accepting the congratulations,
I stormed into Caspian’s office, my face like stone.
Caspian had just arrived too.
He was slumped wearily on the sofa, rubbing his temples.
He looked up, saw me, gave a tired smile, and said hoarsely:
“Knew you’d come.”

“Sorry, after signing the contract yesterday afternoon, we threw Isabella a celebration party. It went on till dawn.”

“Did you sleep okay alone?”
I glanced at the divorce papers on his desk, still untouched.
I looked away and demanded coldly,
“Why did you give my project to Isabella?”
“I don’t care how she got this job, but now it’s hurting my bottom line—”
“Mia.” Caspian interrupted wearily, frowning. “Don’t I give you enough money? You’re coming at me over a few hundred thousand in bonuses?”
“I told you, this is to help Isabella get a foothold.”

Seeing me shaking with anger,

He seemed to relent a little and said,

“Alright, once she’s more capable and can stand on her own, I’ll transfer her out—”

“I remember there’s an opening at the Savannah branch. I’ll send Isabella there then.”

“Can we please not fight over these petty things? I’m exhausted too.”

Caspian slowly raised his wrist.

He checked the time.

Then, with a leisurely stride, he walked over to his desk.

When his eyes landed on the divorce papers, he suddenly stopped.

He just picked them up to look at them when

The intercom phone rang.

Caspian’s face darkened, and he answered it.

A second later,

The HR manager’s voice echoed through the spacious room:

“Mr. Drusus, now that the project is done, should we start the process for Amelia’s transfer?”

Caspian stared at the thin divorce papers.

His face turned grim.

He slowly turned to look at me, his eyes blazing with anger.

But he still forced down his rage and snapped at the phone:

“You’re HR, why are you asking me about this minor stuff?”

“No matter who’s transferring, you decide. Put together the paperwork and bring it to me for my signature.”

“Do I need to repeat myself?!”

Caspian’s eyes were fixed solely on the divorce papers.

He hadn’t even heard what the HR manager said.

Before I could breathe a sigh of relief,

I heard the sound of paper ripping.

“Amelia, this isn’t the first time you’ve mentioned divorce.”

He looked at me with an incredulous expression, his voice icy:

“I’ve thought it through. Isn’t all this because I took Isabella’s cup at the meeting?”

“It was just an automatic reflex. Is that really enough to make you this mad?”

I was stunned.

It suddenly hit me that this had happened so many times before:

It was never my fault.

But Caspian always found a way to blame me, like he was the one in the right.

I just looked at him quietly.

And said nothing.

After a long, uncomfortable silence,

He spoke again, in a tone that was almost magnanimous:

“I know your throat was sore that day, you were worried about me.”

“But at the time, I really didn’t mean anything by it. It’s just an old habit, taking a drink from Isabella after eight years together.”

“I promise it won’t happen again, alright?”

I kept my eyes down.

And silently calculated how to get Caspian to sign the transfer papers.

If he hadn’t brought it up just now, I might have actually forgotten about it.

The key thing was, from the looks of it, Caspian wasn’t going to let me go easily.

My thoughts were a tangled mess, I couldn’t sort them out,

When Caspian’s cousin, who’d been living abroad, showed up.

She breezed in with presents, swept into the office, and laughed heartily:

“I was way too busy when you got married, so the first thing I do when I’m back in the country is apologize to your wife.”

The woman raised an eyebrow, gave me a quick once-over, then turned to Caspian and asked:

“What are you standing there for? Go call Isabella!”

“It’s been four years since I last saw her. I wonder if she’s changed.”
