The One He Let Go Chapter 03

The One He Let Go Chapter 03

I heard him say, “Get out of here, crash the wedding? No way.”

“Me and Isabella are truly over. Eight years is too long, we’ve become like family.”

“Family can be together forever,” Isabella scoffed, interrupting him, “And you think you’ll never get bored of that bland, boring pretty face?”

“Then why aren’t you at home with her tonight?”

“Admit it, Caspian. She’s just a novelty. Give it eight years… hell, maybe just three, and you’ll be sick of her too.”

There was a long silence.

Only the sound of Caspian’s heavy breathing remained.

He didn’t refute her.

And I felt relieved.

Good thing I’d already made up my mind to leave.

Sunk cost is no reason to make a bad decision worse.

Cutting my losses now isn’t too late.

Late that night.

When Caspian came in, I’d just finished drafting the divorce papers.

“Caspian—”

“Sorry, Mr. Drusus is drunk.” The driver settled him on the couch and said respectfully, “Everyone drank a lot and crashed at the hotel.”

“Only Mr. Drusus insisted on coming home to his wife, but the rain was so heavy, we got delayed on the road.”

I glanced at Caspian.

He was slouched lazily on the sofa.

His eyes were dark, and his features were hazy with intoxication.

Right now, he was looking at me with those dazed eyes, like some kind of incubus from a book, and said:

“Wifey.”

“Come here.”

The driver took the hint, excused himself, and closed the door.

I let out a sigh and was about to head to the kitchen to make some milk when I heard Caspian mumble, half-asleep, and instinctively call out:

“Isabella.”

“Bella—”

【Clatter】.

The spoon hit the floor.

And shattered into pieces.

Hearing the noise, the housekeeper rushed out, frantically cleaned up the shards, and tried to comfort me:

“Don’t be mad. Eight years is a long time. He just unconsciously held onto an old habit.”

“In the end, he still married you, didn’t he?”

“He put so much effort into winning you over. That just proves he loves you.”

I didn’t bother to argue.

Because I knew deep down,

I was so done with this life—

Over this past year,

No matter what Caspian and I were doing, Isabella’s calls would always pull him away.

One day, it was a fender bender.

Another day, some creep was stalking her.

It wasn’t until two months ago that Caspian moved her right under his nose at the office, and he finally relaxed.

All those little petty things, enough to drive anyone up the wall.

From now on,

I didn’t want to put up with it anymore.

I didn’t want to see Caspian.

I didn’t even want to have a proper talk.

So, while the housekeeper was making honey water,

I packed up all the luxury goods Caspian had ever given me.

Eighteen huge suitcases’ worth.

Hired a truck.

And left that house.

I booked a presidential suite at a hotel near the office.

I planned to stay there until my transfer.

Once I’d made the decision, every minute felt like an eternity.

So I came into the office early, put the divorce papers on Caspian’s desk,

and went straight to HR to ask when I could leave as soon as possible.

He was looking over some documents when

Suddenly, we heard shouts for help from outside.

We exchanged a glance.

We ran out and found Isabella had collapsed.

Everyone was panicking, not knowing what to do.

I remembered Caspian mentioning she had low blood sugar.

I was just rummaging through my bag for some fruit candy to give her when

Caspian came rushing in.

Without a word, he shoved me aside, and said coldly, “Back off.”

He was incredibly strong.

I stumbled a few steps, couldn’t keep my balance, and banged my shin against the corner of a desk. Blood started streaming out.

But Caspian didn’t even notice.

He just demanded, “Did you call 119?”

After getting a positive reply, he gently patted Isabella’s shoulder.

Getting a weak response, his tense body finally relaxed.

He took some glucose tablets from his assistant and put them in Isabella’s mouth.

Five minutes later.

Isabella came to.

The ambulance arrived.

Caspian stood up and said calmly,

“Knew you still had this old problem.”

“I’ve always kept glucose tablets on me all these years.”

Until they both left the company,

Caspian didn’t spare me a single glance.

I took a photo of my injured shin and sent it to Caspian.

Then I took leave and went to the hospital alone.

After getting my wound treated,

I opened my phone.

I saw Caspian had transferred another ten million to me:

【How did you get so careless?】

【Make sure you use the best medicine.】

【I have urgent matters to attend to right now, can’t be with you for the moment.】

I looked at the countless zeros in my bank balance.

And said 【Okay】, all sweet and agreeable.

HR told me that once I signed the contract for my current project, I could leave right away.

I felt completely calm, and said “Thank you.”

I went straight back to my desk to review the final stages of the project.

I stayed up almost all night.

Getting all those proposals in order.

When I happily contacted the client,

I heard the secretary say, puzzled:

“But we signed the contract yesterday.”

Cold sweat broke out all over me, my mind went blank.

“What do you mean?”

“What do I mean?” The secretary sounded confused. “Mr. Drusus came in person with his team to sign it.”

“Though the final handover wasn’t as polished as the earlier proposals, it was still decent. To—”

【Pop!】

A small party popper went off inside the company.

Followed by Caspian’s secretary clapping:

“Congratulations to Isabella for landing the big deal!”

“Mr. Drusus says everyone gets double the bonus!”
