Mom took the letter with trembling hands.

When she recognized my handwriting and the signature at the bottom, panic finally broke across her face. “Why? Why is Maeve doing this to us…?”

She seemed to be asking everyone else and herself at once.

Selene steadied her, but her voice had lost its earlier confidence.

“Don’t worry. Kael still has her passport. She can’t leave Silverveil Pack.”

Kael’s face changed sharply.

As if remembering something, he whipped around toward the coat in the trash.

He crossed the room in three strides, snatched it up, and searched the inside pocket, then every other pocket.

Empty. Nothing remained.

He froze as the color slowly drained from his face.

His sudden reaction startled Selene.

“Kael? What happened?”

He didn’t answer. He only stared at the coat.

As if one more search might uncover some trace Maeve had left behind.

Selene frowned and called Maeve.

No answer.

She tried again, forcing herself to be patient, but her frown deepened.

Even when Maeve fought with her family or threatened to leave Kael, she’d never ignored Selene’s calls.

Years earlier, when Selene had been bullied, Maeve promised she would always come the moment Selene needed her.

At the memory, a flicker of panic rose inside Selene before she even recognized it.

She quickly typed a message: [Maeve, where did you go? Everyone’s worried. Why do you always have to cause trouble for everyone else?]

She tapped Send.

The message never showed as delivered.

She stared at the screen.

One by one, the others tried messaging me. Every attempt failed.

Their calls went unanswered too.

Mom’s voice began to break.

“A letter cutting all family ties, leaving the group chat, breaking up, blocking us… Maeve… What is Maeve trying to do?!”

No one had an answer.

Just then, Lyra pushed open the door.

She took a sip of milk tea, sounding irritated.

“Why are you all panicking? Maeve’s getting better at this. A letter cutting all family ties? Vanishing without a trace?”

She scoffed. “She’s pretending to disappear so we’ll search everywhere for her and give her attention.”

It was the same comforting lie they’d told themselves countless times before.

After a long silence, Mom sighed. “She’s done this before. She’ll come back when she calms down.”

Selene finally seemed to find something to believe in too.

“Exactly. That’s just how Maeve is. She would never truly leave the Vale family.”

Lyra smiled, satisfied.

She set her milk tea on the table and took Mom’s hand.

“Mom, I’m hungry. I want barbecue ribs.”

Mom nodded at once. “Okay. I’ll make them right now. Your first meal home should be whatever you want.”

Once again, everyone’s attention returned to Lyra.

Only Kael remained where he was.

For days, he’d questioned the doctors around the clock about the side effects of the muting drug.

He’d finally relaxed when they guaranteed Maeve’s voice would fully recover.

He’d counted down the days and secretly prepared a gift, determined to explain everything to her face-to-face.

He checked his phone constantly, wanting to ask whether there was anything she wanted.

But every time he saw her final message, [Kael, we’re over], his pride and resentment flared.

So he never sent anything.

He told himself Maeve was merely angry.

She would come back eventually.

Just like every other time.

But ten days had passed.

Since the day they’d met, she’d never gone this long without contacting him.

Kael stared at his call history as a terrifying thought came to him for the first time.

Maybe this time, she truly wasn’t coming back.
