The Muted Luna’s Revenge Chapter 03

The Muted Luna’s Revenge Chapter 03

I asked the driver to take me to Ashford Pack hospital.

The only person there I couldn’t bear to leave behind was Kael’s mother, Evelyn Ashford.

She’d been diagnosed with stomach cancer a year earlier. Ever since, her greatest wish had been to see Kael and me complete our mate bond.

After I lost my voice, she cared for me tirelessly, and I’d come to love her like my own mother.

Before I left, I wanted to say goodbye to her in person.

But just as I raised my hand to knock, a familiar voice came from inside.

It was Mom.

“You were incredible. You even faked being sick convincingly. Maeve still has no idea you staged that episode during her competition to lure her away and give Lyra a chance to win.”

Evelyn laughed.

“That girl is ridiculously gullible. I casually said I wanted to see her and Kael complete their mate bond, and she started treating me like family. I’ve been healthy for ages, but pretending to be sick gave Lyra and Kael more time alone together. I’d say it was worth it.”

I froze, then somehow made it to the window and looked into the room.

In the corner, Kael and Lyra were locked in a passionate kiss.

My ears rang, and the room pitched around me.

For a moment, I even forgot I’d lost my voice.

All I felt was my chest being ripped open.

Then my knees buckled, and I fell against the hospital room door.

The laughter stopped dead.

Before I could steady myself, someone yanked me back into the hall.

My old lower-back injury struck the door handle. Blood seeped through my clothes as my vision dimmed.

When my sight cleared, Selene’s furious face filled my view.

“Maeve Vale! How long are you going to keep this up? If you hadn’t used the fact that you saved his mother to guilt Kael into being with you, he and Lyra wouldn’t have had to sneak around all this time!”

“Now that you’ve seen them, we won’t hide it anymore. Lyra and Kael have been together for ages! If you have any self-respect, you’ll stop clinging to Kael!”

She looked furious and utterly righteous, as though I were the one who had betrayed them.

Mom rushed out and seized my arm.

“If you’re angry, take it out on us. Don’t you dare hurt Lyra! You’ve taken things from her since you were little. Now she’s only taking back the happiness that should’ve been hers.”

Evelyn leaned against the bed, conflicted.

“Maeve, can’t you please let Kael go? He’s only truly happy with Lyra.”

I couldn’t hear a thing.

I turned my head and looked at Kael.

His face was pale, and his eyes were panicked. His mouth moved as if he wanted to explain.

Then Lyra clutched her chest with a sudden cry.

Kael’s attention snapped to her, and he turned to support her.

The others immediately closed ranks around Lyra, shielding her from me.

As if I were some vicious witch.

My wolf whimpered in agony inside me.

After a long moment, I forced all my strength into one broken word. “…Okay.”

Without looking at any of them again, I turned and stumbled away.

Chaos erupted behind me.

“Kael, don’t chase her! She’s mute. It’s not like she can tell anyone!”

“Kael, get a grip! Can’t you see Lyra’s sick?”

My phone vibrated nonstop in my pocket as Selene’s messages came one after another.

[You need to accept reality.]

[He’s never attended a single one of your competitions, but he’s never missed one of Lyra’s performances.]

[He didn’t order those dishes because he forgot about your allergy. He ordered them because Lyra likes them.]

[That ring he gave you was too big because Lyra rejected it first.]

[We hid the truth because we were afraid you’d hurt Lyra. We never imagined she’d suffer so much because of it.]

Each message made me feel sicker than the last.

I pulled out my phone and rebooked myself onto the next flight.

Then I grabbed my suitcase and headed straight for the airport without a backward glance.

Only minutes remained before boarding when an airline employee stopped me.

“Ms. Vale, please wait. There’s a problem with your passport.”
