The Marriage License Was A Lie Chapter 03

The Marriage License Was A Lie Chapter 03

In that moment, I felt like an object put on display, powerless, exposed, and burning with hatred.

“Adrian Whitmore. Chloe Prescott. Remember what you did today.”

“Because when the time comes, I, Evelyn Blackwood, will make you pay twice over.”

“I’ll make the families you’re so proud of fall because of you.”

The moment I said that, everyone burst into mocking laughter again.

“You? Some girl from nowhere? What could you possibly do to bankrupt both our families?”

Knowing I could not move, Chloe rushed over and slapped me across the face.

Her nails deliberately raked across my cheek, leaving a sharp, burning sting behind.

“You bitch. What I hate most is that face of yours, the one you use to seduce men.”

“And let me tell you something else.”

“Once the bet is over, I’m going to have them catch cockroaches and feed them to you.”

“Disgusting people deserve disgusting food, don’t they?”

“After you’ve had enough, I’ll let them have their fun with you.”

I met her smug gaze coldly.

“I’m afraid that by then, the one eating cockroaches and getting passed around will be you.”

“Shut up.”

She slapped the other side of my face, and the foam thinned a little more.

Chloe smiled with sly satisfaction, while the men behind her grew even more excited.

“There goes my ten million.”

“If I’d known Adrian spoiled Chloe this much, I never would’ve made that stupid bet.”

“Evelyn, you useless little bitch. You made me lose money, so I’m going to be the first one to take it back from you.”

Adrian held a cigarette between his fingers, a mocking smile tugging at his lips.

“I’m not done with her yet, and you’re already calling dibs?”

“Then I’ll ask Chloe. You spoil her the most, so you won’t be able to say no if she asks.”

“Right, Chloe?”

Chloe smiled, clearly eager to twist the knife, and turned to Adrian.

“Adrian, just do what I ask.”

“The wedding may have been fake, but I’m still a little upset.”

“You and Evelyn should be done after this.”

“All right, all right. Whatever you want.”

Did these two really think their families gave them the right to decide other people’s fates?

Did they really think they could trample on someone’s dignity whenever they pleased?

From my stepmother’s family, I had learned ruthlessness, decisiveness, and cold-blooded restraint. But from Adrian and the people around him, I had learned an even crueler kind of revenge.

“Evelyn, I did love you once, but your background could only take you this far.”

“So hating me won’t change anything. If you need to blame someone, blame the family you were born into.”

Someone crushed a cockroach under his shoe, picked it up, and deliberately threw it at my face.

He wanted to make me angry, because if I got angry, the foam would disappear faster.

Rage blurred my vision as I stared at every person who had humiliated me, memorizing each of their faces.

“You’re going to pay for this arrogance.”

“Sure, if we’d offended someone powerful. But you’re different.”

“What are you going to do? Pound your little fists at me in bed?”

“Hahahaha!”

“Adrian really is heartless. She did help him climb from rock bottom to the head of the Whitmore succession.”

“So what? The Whitmore family isn’t some ordinary household. How could he marry a woman with no background and make her the real Mrs. Whitmore?”

“Evelyn, you’re too naive.”

“With your brains and your looks, the most you could ever be in our world is a woman kept in the shadows. You’ll never be someone we bring into the light.”
