The Marriage License Was A Lie Chapter 01

The Marriage License Was A Lie Chapter 01

To mess with me, my boyfriend’s childhood friend cut my swimsuit to pieces.

I grabbed a blade, cut the ruined swimsuit into a makeshift bikini, and walked out looking good enough to make everyone stare.

Chloe Prescott was so furious she looked ready to grind her teeth flat. From that moment on, she started looking for a second chance to humiliate me.

That chance came on our wedding night.

I was soaking in the bathtub when a swarm of filthy cockroaches suddenly crawled out around me.

My face went white with fear. Just as I tried to stand and reach for my robe, Chloe burst in with a group of people behind her.

“Ha! Evelyn Blackwood, I finally got you. Let’s see you get yourself out of this one.”

“Pay up, everyone. She’s scared of cockroaches.”

They started sending each other money while staring straight at my body, their eyes disgusting, greedy, and obscene.

“Damn. I think I almost saw something.”

“Holy shit. Come on, you nasty little roaches. Crawl into her tub already. I want a better view.”

I was shaking with rage.

“Adrian Whitmore, where are you? Get in here and throw them out!”

“I’m scared of cockroaches!”

To my shock, he was standing right outside the bathroom door, completely indifferent to the situation I was in.

“Why are you yelling? Don’t you love showing off your body in front of people? Then go ahead and show it.”

“They’re just cockroaches. You came from nothing anyway, so stop acting so delicate.”

He was right.

They were just cockroaches.

So I picked up my phone and said into the line, “Search the entire city for cockroaches. Send me a whole truckload. I’m going to make those two bastards eat every last one.”

***

“Hahahaha, what did she just say?”

“Those two bastards? Make us eat cockroaches? Is Evelyn Blackwood talking about Adrian and me?”

With an innocent little smile, Chloe turned to look at Adrian. His expression darkened at once.

“Evelyn, what exactly do you think you can do to make us eat cockroaches?”

“Search the whole city, huh? You’re acting like you’re some kind of queen.”

“Exactly.”

Someone chimed in, though his filthy eyes stayed fixed on my chest.

I clutched myself tightly and tried to sink as low as I could beneath the bath foam.

But the foam would not last long. Once it disappeared, the cockroaches would crawl up the side of the tub.

The men crowded outside the bathroom, waiting to watch me break.

I clenched my fists and stared at Adrian, shaking with rage.

The moment I trembled, the foam covering me thinned a little. I was so frightened that I did not dare move again, but I still could not stop the tears from rising.

Chloe walked over to Adrian and rested a hand on his shoulder.

“Adrian, you’re not allowed to help her right now.”

“Logan Hayes and I still have a bet going. Ten million dollars.”

“I bet that you love me the most and that you won’t step in to help Evelyn for at least half an hour.”

“He bet I’d lose. He said you’d eventually give in and save her.”

Then Chloe grabbed Adrian’s hand and pouted at him like a spoiled child.

I still held on to the last shred of hope. I thought Adrian would refuse such an outrageous demand.

Instead, he lifted his hand without hesitation and tapped Chloe lightly on the nose.

“You. You’ve been this naughty since we were kids. Careful, or no one will marry you.”

“So that means you’re saying yes?”

“Adrian, you’re the best. I knew you loved me the most. Logan, don’t forget to pay up.”

The men erupted.

“Pay up. If he doesn’t pay you, I’ll cover it for him.”

“Damn, Adrian spoils Chloe more than he spoils his own wife. Looks like I’d better stay on Chloe’s good side.”

Chloe lifted her chin, smug and arrogant, and looked down at me like I was nothing.

I stared at Adrian in disbelief. He reached out and smoothed a few loose strands of Chloe’s hair.

“Don’t look at me like you want to tear me apart. Chloe is like a little sister to me. You just married into the Whitmore family. As my wife, you should be generous with her.”

“It’s only a bet. It’s not going to kill you. Besides, you’re already Mrs. Whitmore.”

Someone could not help but say, “Adrian, you’re still hiding it from her?”

“Your marriage certificate with Evelyn is fake.”
