Early the next morning, before the sun was even up, my

parents, Matteo, and Bianca were standing outside my room,

ready to take me for the makeup Family photo.

I usually woke up at seven.

But by nine o’clock, my door was still shut.

Father glanced at Matteo and told him to knock.

“Elena, time to get up.”

“Hurry up. We’re all waiting for you. The photographer won’t

hold his schedule for the Moretti Family forever.”

He knocked for a long time, but there was no sound from

inside.

Under his breath, he muttered, “She didn’t drink some

drugged milk and sleep through her alarm again, did she?”

The moment he said it, all three of them turned to look at

Bianca.

Bianca flinched and waved her hands frantically.

“It wasn’t me. It really wasn’t.”

“You can check the security footage.”

The day before, our parents hadn’t made a scene in front of me, but they had privately reprimanded Bianca.

Father had told her, “Elena is my blood, too. If you lay a hand on her, you’re violating the protection protocols within the head of the Family’s own home.”

“If I catch you doing this again, your guards will be removed, and you won’t attend another Family function.”

Bianca had nodded quickly, saying she understood her

mistake.

Now that they had ruled out the possibility of her drugging

me again, Father used the master key to open my door.
