The room was empty.

Only a few bare hangers were left in the closet. The suitcase was gone, and the encrypted phone issued by the Family sat

on the desk.

My parents‘ faces stiffened. Shock gave way to disbelief, then hardened into anger.

“We already said we would make it up to her, and she still

shuts off all her access and runs off without a word.”

“Does she have any idea what it means to be without the

Family’s protection?”

The more Mother spoke, the angrier she became. She picked

up her phone and called the photographer.

“Cancel today’s Family photo appointment.”

“Yes. We’re not doing it.”

After hanging up, she ordered Matteo to call me.

“Tell her to come back right now.”

“If she still considers this place her home, she needs to stop

this nonsense.”

Matteo dialed my number again and again, but every call

went straight to voicemail.

“Mom, Elena’s not answering.”

Mother slammed her phone down on the table.

“She’s not even answering her phone now?”

She opened her chat history and scrolled down until she found the old group that had included me.

She was about to message me there when she realized my profile picture was gone.

Bianca reminded her softly, “Don’t bother looking. I think she left the group.”

My mother froze.

“She left?”

How was that possible?

Back when I had first returned from my grandmother’s

and found out they had a Family group chat, I had been desperate to be added.

At the time, Mother had been preoccupied with Bianca’s

feelings. She also felt that, by tradition, daughters shouldn’t

be privy to the Family’s real business, so she had put it off,

refusing to add me.

I had begged for days to get into that group, even getting up early several mornings in a row to make breakfast for

everyone.

In the end, worn down by my persistence, Mother had only added me to a public group that didn’t involve any real

security arrangements.
