That evening, a friend texted to invite me to a new restaurant that had just opened. I texted back to say I’d be there, then headed out.

Just outside the neighborhood gate, I heard frantic, ragged gasps behind me. A familiar, broken sob. “Rhea… Rhea…”

I stopped and turned.

Theron stood a few yards away, deathly pale. His eyes were hollow, but fixed on me like I was his last tether.

“How did you get in here?” My voice was flat. No surprise. No pity.

He dragged himself toward me, crumpling to his knees, his hands gripping the hem of my jeans. “Rhea, I was wrong… please forgive me…”

He was begging. Utterly broken.

“I know I deserve to die. But I regret everything. Please. Give me one more chance. I’ll do anything. Just say you forgive me.”

I looked down at him, my gaze cold as ice. “Theron, you didn’t wrong me. Or rather, your wrongs aren’t mine to forgive. You made your choices. Now live with them.”

“No… no…” He shook his head, his body trembling with pain. “I can’t go on, Rhea. Just say you don’t hate me. Please.”

“I don’t hate you.” My voice was steady.

He looked up, a flicker of hope in his eyes.

Then I finished it. “I just don’t care. You and I settled our accounts long ago. Whether you live or die—it has nothing to do with me.”

The hope died.

His eyes went blank. He collapsed, and then a hollow, desperate laugh escaped him.

“Settled… yeah. We are settled. I did this to myself. I deserve it…”

His mind started to fade.

He looked at me one last time. “Since you won’t forgive me… I’ll go with you. Even in death, I’ll be with you…”

His body went rigid, then crumpled to the ground. His consciousness slipped away.

I watched his form grow translucent and vanish. No emotion stirred in me.

I turned back toward the new restaurant.

This was just the final page of his story. It had nothing to do with mine.

I smiled. The sun was still warm.
