The Luna Beyond His Reach Chapter 06

The Luna Beyond His Reach Chapter 06

At the hospital, I knocked on my friend’s door.

She looked up, delighted. “Rhea? You came! But you look terrible.”

“Just wanted to see you and the baby.” I managed a smile, pushing down the metallic taste rising in my throat. “He’s beautiful.”

Memories of Theron surfaced unbidden.

Late one night, curled up on the couch watching a parenting documentary. He held me close and said he wanted a daughter someday—my eyes, his personality.

We’d talked about painting the nursery light blue, filling it with picture books and toys.

Now it just felt hollow. None of it mattered.

After half an hour, the pain in my chest was unbearable.

I stood to leave. “I have to go. Rest well.”

Outside her room, I leaned against the wall. My vision started to blur.

I pulled out my phone and sent my friend one last message: wishing her and the baby joy. Then I deleted all of Theron’s contact info.

When that was done, I slid to the floor.

In the haze, I thought I heard his voice. “Rhea! Rhea!”

But I had no strength to respond.

The pain faded, replaced by an unfamiliar lightness.

I smiled, and let go.
