The Intern Sat Beside Him, So I Took Everything in the Divorce Chapter 04

The news reached Harold Fulton faster than I expected.

That afternoon, in the middle of a meeting, Natalie leaned in and whispered, “Old man Fulton blew his top. Trevor’s grounded—like, actually confined to the house. Told him to sit and think.”

I kept my face blank and finished the meeting.

Afterward, Natalie came back. “Mr. Fulton stormed out. Mrs. Fulton couldn’t stop him.”

“Got it.”

She didn’t leave. I waved for her to continue.

“But Mrs. Fulton issued a formal industry ban from the Fulton side—fired Mirabel directly. That’s even harsher than what we did.”

I nodded. But I wasn’t worried about the Fultons’ reaction.

I was worried about Trevor.

Sure enough, he came home at ten that night.

The door slammed back against the wall.

“Scarlett Hayes.”

His tie was gone, his eyes bloodshot.

I’d expected him tonight. His pathetic state disappointed me.

“Did you go running to my dad?”

“I wouldn’t do that.” I didn’t even bother opening my eyes.

“Then how did he find out?”

“You’ve done enough—someone was bound to talk.”

He came up to me, barely holding back the urge to lash out.

“My dad’s grounding me. That make you feel good?”

“I think you deserve it.”

He laughed bitterly and slapped the back of the couch.

“Scarlett, seriously—what do you want from me? She’s an intern. You fired her, you pulled every string to make sure she never gets hired again, and now even my mother’s ganging up on her! The girl just graduated college. Why can’t you cut her some slack?”

I set down my teacup and stood slowly.

“Let it go? Trevor, your family’s annual revenue isn’t even a quarter of my group’s quarterly earnings. Do you really think I, Scarlett Hayes, need to feel threatened by an intern?”

His face froze for a second.

“You think this is jealousy?”

I stepped closer, and his bravado crumbled.

“I’m giving you a last chance to save face. You know how you landed that seat. If you don’t want to keep it, I’ll torch everything.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed. He didn’t back down, but his fists clenched.

“All you do is threaten me.”

“I’m not threatening you. I’m reminding you—don’t get confused about who’s who.”

The air went still.

He spun around, grabbed his keys off the coffee table, and headed for the door.

“Where are you going?”

“None of your business.”

He didn’t look back. The door slammed behind him.

I stood there and sighed.

Then I sent Trevor one last message: [Trevor. I’m out of patience.]
