The Intern Sat Beside Him, So I Took Everything in the Divorce Chapter 05

A week later, Natalie brought me news.

Trevor and Mirabel had been spotted at a high-society charity gala—walking in together, arms linked, making no effort to hide it.

I didn’t hesitate. I called the Fulton estate directly.

The butler answered.

“Put Mr. Fulton on. Tell him Scarlett Hayes is calling to break the engagement.”

The butler’s voice trembled. “Ms. Hayes, it’s very late—the old master is already asleep …”

“Get him on the phone.”

Five minutes later, Harold’s raspy voice came through, clearly woken up.

“Scarlett?”

“Mr. Fulton, I’m giving you formal notice. My engagement to Trevor is over.”

The line went quiet for a few seconds.

“Don’t be rash. Tell me what Trevor did, and I’ll—”

“I’m not being rash. I gave him plenty of chances. What he did tonight made his position clear. There’s nothing left to discuss.”

“Scarlett, just listen—”

“Mr. Fulton, I’ve said all I need to say. I’ll come by in person to handle the rest.”

I hung up.

Natalie stood at the door, reading my face.

“Get the documents ready. Tomorrow at ten, I’m going to the Fultons’ place.”

“Ms. Hayes, should I notify legal?”

“No. Just bring security.”

She nodded and turned, but I called her back.

“Also, put the group’s PR team on standby. Photos from tonight’s gala will leak. I don’t want them controlling the narrative until I’ve finished my meeting.”

“Understood.”

Early the next morning, Natalie had everything organized and delivered.

I brewed a strong cup of coffee and stood by the window, watching the sun rise over the city skyline.

Just as I was about to leave, my phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.

[Ms. Hayes, I heard you’re calling off the wedding? Trevor told me he’d never let you go, by the way. Not that it’s any of my business—just thought you should know :)]

Mirabel.

I stared at that smiley face for a long moment, then smiled myself.

I blocked the number and sent Natalie another message: [Bring extra security.]

The Fulton estate’s door was opened by the butler, his expression grim.

“Ms. Hayes, Mr. Fulton is waiting in the living room.”

I walked in with my security team, and every eye in the room locked onto me.

Harold sat in the center armchair, his face pale with anger. Mrs. Fulton sat to the side, eyes red, clutching a handkerchief. Several uncles and a lawyer I recognized completed the lineup.
