The Intern Sat Beside Him, So I Took Everything in the Divorce Chapter 03

“Ms. Hayes, Mr. Fulton has been meeting with that company frequently. The projects aren’t major, but he goes there at least twice a week, not counting video calls.”

Natalie handed me the tablet with Trevor’s calendar for the past month.

I flipped through it. “Go on.”

“And one more thing …” She hesitated. “After Mirabel left, she joined that exact company—as a business director’s assistant.”

My hand stopped scrolling.

“A fresh grad, blacklisted from the whole industry, and she lands as a director’s assistant?”

“That company isn’t on our core partner list—just a tier-two supplier. So we don’t usually monitor them closely.”

I put the tablet down and leaned back, saying nothing.

Natalie stood still.

After about two minutes, I said, “How many active projects do we have with them?”

“Three. Two are still under contract, one just signed.”

“Terminate all of them.”

Her pen paused. “All of them? Ms. Hayes, one project already has a deposit paid …”

“Forget the deposit. The termination clause favors us—have legal send the notice today.”

“Understood. Anything else?”

I pulled up my contacts and scrolled through.

“Pull a list of all suppliers that work with that company. You call them personally. Every firm in our industry that does business with us—cut off all ties with that company.”

“Ms. Hayes, that might make waves …”

“This isn’t even a ripple.” I tossed the tablet onto the desk. “When I handle someone, they’re handled. No coming back under a different name. And anyone who gave her that leg up? I take them out too. If I can’t take it apart nice and clean, I blow it up—and everyone on it goes with it.”

Natalie took a breath and nodded, heading out.

She spent the whole afternoon on calls.

Her final report: no one dared say no.

That night, Trevor came home looking wrecked. His phone kept ringing.

He hung up on God knows how many calls, then another came in. His voice cracked, “I know, just calm down!”

I was eating dinner at the table. He hung up and turned to me.

“You did this?”

“Yeah.”

“Do you know that project affects us too?”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Trevor.” I set my fork down and looked at him. “I told you to fire her and scrap the car. You did that. But then you turned around and set her up somewhere new, using our business as cover. Did you think I wouldn’t notice?”

His mouth opened, but nothing came out.

“You can think I’m jealous, controlling, heartless—I don’t care. But don’t take me for an idiot.”

I stood and walked up to him.

“This is the last time I’m warning you: stop playing games.”

Trevor stared at me for a long time, something complicated in his eyes.

He looked away, his voice hoarse.

“Scarlett, can’t you give anyone a break?”

I smiled. “Who exactly are you talking about?”

He didn’t answer.

I turned and walked into the study. Before closing the door, I threw out one last line, “Trevor, if you speak up for her again, next time won’t be this simple.”
