Damian’s POV

By the time I got back to the pack house, it was already late.

Vera frowned and walked over to support me.

“How much have you had?”

I shook her off. Made my way to the liquor cabinet.

I grabbed a bottle of whiskey and took a long pull.

The alcohol burned down my throat, burning away the last shred of my restraint.

“Why?” I turned, leaning against the cold cabinet.

My eyes were bloodshot, fixed on her.

“You gave Rod the address, didn’t you?”

“Why’d you have to go that far? I thought you were her friend.”

The softness on Vera’s face froze. Then faded.

“Damian, get a grip.”

I let out a low, bitter laugh.

“Are you sure your pregnancy… was really an accident?”

Her expression darkened. The carefully maintained composure cracked.

“Damian, what are you saying? Are you accusing me of trapping you?”

“Who came onto who back then? Who said he would take responsibility?”

“Responsibility,” I repeated. It sounded ridiculous as I said it out loud.

The alcohol pushed everything over the edge.

I hurled the bottle to the ground. Glass shattered, Amber liquid splashed everywhere.

“I don’t love you, Vera!” My voice came out raw.

“I never have. The only one I’ve ever loved-is Raven. Always have been.”

The air went still.

I’d finally said it.

Vera’s eyes widened. “You don’t love me?”

“My background is better. My bloodline is purer. What does she have that I don’t?”

“Damian, she’s not fit to be Luna!”

“You chose me because I was the better choice. So what is this? What’s gotten into you?”

Every word hit exactly where it hurt.

I staggered back, slamming into the cabinet with a dull thud.

All the compromises and calculations were laid bare. It was ugly enough to make me feel sick.

“I thought I could do it…”

Vera’s voice cut through, sharp and shrill.

“You thought? You thought you could control everything?”

Tears streaked through her makeup.

“Bet you didn’t see this coming. Her little ‘amnesia’ act? Just a test.”

“And now? She’s done with you.”

I raked my hands through my hair. Pain clawed through me.

“No… no, she wouldn’t leave me.”

“I’ll go find her. I’ll explain everything. I’ll beg her to forgive me…

I stumbled toward the door.

Vera grabbed my arm with all her strength.

“No! Don’t go! Damian, look at me!”

“I’m carrying your pup. We’re about to get married. Your parents already recognize me as Luna!”

“We can get rid of the pup!” I blurted out.

The words shocked even me. But I couldn’t stop.

“I will deal with my parents. I will take care of everything.”

A sharp slap echoed through the room.

I went still.

Vera stared at me. Her voice broke.

“Wake up. Raven’s not coming back to you.”

Tears slipped down her cheek.

“And she won’t forgive me either.”

“All we have left… is each other.”
