Over the next few days, Killian searched everywhere for atry lead on where I’d gone.

In the end, it was one of my former colleagues who sent him a video clip from the mating ceremony.

As Killian turned to leave, the colleague was still whispering behind him.

“Her own brother didn’t even know the date of Vanessa’s mating ceremony. Unbelievable.”

“God, Vanessa really got dealt a rough hand.”

Killian’s back went stiff. He thought of the day before I left.

Everyone had been yelling at me. And he’d been the one to physically hold me down, disgusted, accusing me

of ruining everything.

All I’d wanted was to take back what was mine.

He went home and played the video for our parents.

When our Luna mother saw it, the tears came again. “My Vanessa… where did she go?”

Our Alpha father’s eyes reddened. He turned to Killian. “Find her. She can’t have just vanished.”

“Killian, go make two new redwood chests. When Vanessa comes home, give them to her.”

Killian clenched his fists and nodded hard.

During my second week at Ironclaw Pack, I received a thank-you letter co-signed by every Omega in the

territory.

After wrapping up my pack duties, I headed back to the pack house around noon.

The moment I stepped through the door, streamers rained down on my face.

Elsa bounced in front of me. “Congratulations! You’ve officially earned the pack members’ approval!”

Morgan’s mother was smiling too. The dining table was covered with all my favorite foods.

“Vanessa, congratulations!”

“I just handled some logistics work,” I said.

Morgan took my bag himself. “I know my Luna’s capabilities better than anyone. Soon you’ll have the whole

pack behind you.”

“Now come eat!”

Elsa suddenly whined “Mom! I wanted spicy beef stew. How could you forget to tell the servants to add

chili?

Morgan’s mother gave her a light swat, “Today is Vanessa’s celebration. She can’t eat spicy food. I’ll make

yours tonight.”

Elsa was satisfied. She hooked her arm through mine and gave a playful little huff. “Fine, that’s more like

it.”

Morgan’s mother remembered every family member’s preferences and needs. In this pack house, whenever

anyone had a request, she did her best to accommodate it.

Now, no one would ever ask me to be the one who compromised.

Life at Ironclaw Pack was ordinary. But this was exactly what home was supposed to feel like.

Less than a month in, I realized I’d actually gained weight.

That evening, I turned on my old phone.

Messages flooded the screen.

Dozens of missed calls from my parents, from Killian, from Leona.

Mother had sent the most. I scrolled for a long time.

[Vanessa! Where are you? The mating ceremony is about to start!]

[Are you still hung up on the money we asked you to give Leona? You’re so selfish!]

Later, she kept sending messages every day. But gradually, the accusations disappeared.

[Vanessa, I’m sorry. I just found your medical report.]

[Come home. I’ll cook whatever you want.]

She didn’t even know what I liked to eat.

The most recent message had come last night.

[Can you please just call me back? I want to apologize. Please.]

I stared at that message and slowly drifted somewhere far away.

In my entire life, Mother had never apologized to me.

Because she always believed she was right.

Now, looking at those words, I felt nothing. Not a flicker of hope.

An apology that comes too late is an apology I no longer want.
