The Family Group Chat Without Me, The Truth They Hid Chapter 05

The hospital room was spotless, which only tnade the jacket in the trash stand out more.

It was Stellan’s.

He knew it instantly.

He had put it around Cyra’s shoulders that day because he knew she hated needles and had always been

afraid of pain.

But Mirelle’s condition had seemed more urgent, and he couldn’t leave her side. So he had left the jacket with Cyra, planning to come back for her once the blood draw was over.

Then, in all the chaos, he had forgotten.

Now he stood there staring at the jacket in the trash, his knuckles white.

A strange bitterness lingered in his mouth.

Mom looked around the empty room, startled.

“When did she leave? She couldn’t even tell her own family?”

She picked up her phone and immediately saw my final message in the family group chat.

[From now on, I’m done with this family.]

Mom threw her phone down.

“Unbelievable! We’ve spoiled her way too much!”

“Done with this family‘? Please. Let’s see how long she lasts without us!”

“She’s difficult enough normally. Even in the hospital, she couldn’t be half as sweet or considerate as Miri.”

Not half as sweet as Miri.

Ever since Mirelle had been diagnosed with a heart condition in high school, Mom had said some version of

that whenever I refused to give in.

“Can’t you let your sister have this one thing?”

“Miri’s health is fragile. Would it kill you to be a little more understanding?”

“Why can’t you be more like Miri?”

Now the words came just as easily, as if they were the most reasonable thing in the world.

Tamsin patted Mom’s back.

“It’s okay, Mrs. Bellmont. You know Cyra. She’s always done her own thing, even back in school. Give her a couple of days. She’ll cool off and come back.”

As she spoke, her eyes drifted across the table and landed on a document beside a house key.

The Rey belonged to the Bellmont house

But the document…

Tamsin frowned, picked it up, and opened it.

The color drained from her face.

“A… a letter saying she’s cutting ties with the family?!”

Everyone froze.

Mom’s knees buckled, and she grabbed the bed rail just in time to keep herself upright.

Stellan crossed the room quickly and caught her.

But his own fingers had gone cold, his palms slick with sweat as an uneasy feeling settled over him.

Tamsin read the few lines over and over, unable to say a word.
