The competition was over. 

The second Adrian got his phone back and found out what had happened to me, he called right away. 

His voice was thick, like he was holding back tears. 

“Elena, are you okay?” 

“Yeah, I’m fine. Your mom’s been taking great care of 

me. I’ve even gained weight.” 

“Have you hated me all these years? Every time you got 

beaten, it was because of me.” 

“Adrian, none of that was your fault. He always 

would’ve found a new reason to hit me. That’s how it’s 

always been.” 

“I wish I could’ve stolen you away when you were 

little.” 

I laughed. “Then raise me all over again.” 

“Okay… Elena, I’ll work hard and get rich. I’ll give you 

the best of everything.” 

“I don’t lack material things. What I lack is love. So 

Adrian, love me.” 

My words left Adrian so flustered and dazed that he 

could hardly think straight. All he wanted was to come 

home. 

After school, I went to the diner. 

Nora was not open for business that day. She had 

bought a ton of groceries and was waiting for her son to 

come home. 

She worked in the kitchen while I sat doing practice 

papers. 

Then suddenly, I saw Sebastian standing outside the 

door. 

I walked over, instantly on guard. 

“What are you doing here?” 

Sebastian looked pale. 

He yanked up his sleeve to show me his arm. The skin was split open and covered in raw welts, with hardly a 

patch left untouched. 

The parts hidden under his clothes were probably even 

worse. 

“After you left, Harrison beat me even harder.” 

“But I’m not leaving. I put up with all these years for a reason. I’m going to take every last bit of Harrison’s 

money and power.” 

Coldly, I said, “That was your choice.” 

“But all that hatred still has to go somewhere.” 

“Adrian’s coming back today. If he gets here and finds out that rapist father of his took his mother, he won’t look so happy and smug anymore, will he?” 

Sebastian really was a demon. 

Unlike my last life, this time he chose today to destroy 

Adrian’s life. 

Just then, a rat–faced old man barged into the diner with a group of men behind him. 

The old man was Earl Cline. 

He said shamelessly, “Nora! I’m here to take you 

home!” 

I pulled out my phone and started to call the police while stepping in front of them. 

“Nora is not your wife. I already called the cops. You’d 

better leave right now.” 

They slapped the phone out of my hand. 

One of Earl Cline’s relatives looked me over and leered. 

“Well damn, she’s a pretty little thing. Take her too. I’ll 

make her my wife. Hahaha.” 

“You people are animals!” 

I grabbed a chair and swung it at them. 

But there were too many of them. Earl Cline’s relatives grabbed hold of me and held me back. 

Earl Cline strode straight into the kitchen to grab Nora. 

Then came a scream from inside. 

“Ahhh!” 

It was Earl Cline screaming. 

Nora charged out of the kitchen with a bloody cleaver 

in her hand. 

The men who had been acting so vicious a second ago 

scattered instantly like frightened rats. 

Nora had spiraled. She ran after them with the cleaver. 

When she saw Sebastian, maybe because she remembered he was one of the boys who had bullied 

Adrian, she went after him too. 

Sebastian’s face changed completely. Terrified, he bolted blindly toward the other side of the street. 

Then Sebastian was struck and killed by an oncoming 

truck. 

Nora came back to herself, dropped the cleaver, and 

collapsed to the ground. 

I ran over and held her as I stared at the mangled mess 

in the road. My mind was blank. I felt no grief, no joy, 

no love, and no hate. 

My limbs felt numb. 

I was so, so cold. 

Then someone wrapped both Nora and me in a warm, 

powerful embrace. 

“Adrian… you’re back.” 

He pulled us close and rested his forehead against 

mine. 

“Yeah. I’m back.” 

Nora had killed Earl Cline. 

She had a documented psychiatric diagnosis, and she 

had been in the middle of an episode, so she bore no criminal responsibility. 

Those men were so afraid she might snap and start 

swinging a blade again that none of them dared come 

back. 

And Sebastian, who had died while running across the 

street, ended up carrying the fate Nora had suffered in my last life.
