The Don’s Forgotten Wife Took Down His Empire Chapter 05

I stared dead at the box in Serena’s hands, grief roaring through me so fierce I tasted blood at the back of my throat.

What was inside… That was really my mom…

When she met my gaze, Serena cackled so hard she could barely stand. “You and your mom are such a pair of idiots! All I did was show her the video of you on your knees begging someone, and she got so mad her heart gave out.

“Honestly? Two short-lived losers like you belong together six feet under.”

“Serena, I’m gonna kill you!”

White-hot rage and grief swallowed me whole. I lunged at her hysterically and slammed my hands around her throat.

If what she said was true…

I couldn’t imagine how broken my mom must have been, watching that video. The woman who loved me more than anything.

“Damian, help! She’s trying to kill me!”

The next second, a hard kick sent me flying backward. I tumbled across the floor, my forehead slamming into a table, and the whole world spun.

“Scarlett, have you lost your mind?”

Damian pulled Serena into his arms, holding her like she was some priceless treasure.

When he turned to look at me, his face was twisted with disgust. “Serena felt bad for you and was kind enough to bring your medical bills. How dare you attack her?”

Everything went quiet. The whole world drained of color.

All I could see was the half container of ash left in that box. I stumbled toward it, reaching to cradle the box against my chest.

Before my fingers could brush the wood, Damian kicked it hard out of my way.

“What’s this garbage?”

Serena shook her head, putting on her best innocent act. “I don’t know, maybe it’s just trash Mrs. Moretti picked up somewhere.”

Damian looked at me, the disgust in his eyes out in the open for everyone to see. “Scarlett, look at you. Do you even look like a Mafia Donna anymore?”

Right in front of me, he dumped the rest of the ash straight into the trash can.

He smashed the urn on the ground, and it shattered into a dozen pieces.

The sharp crack of impact was so loud it nearly split my eardrums.

I froze, then crumpled to my knees. I stared at Damian with every fiber of my being hating him, tears streaming down my face. “I don’t look like a Mafia Donna?

“What about you? Do you even look like a husband? Or a son-in-law!”

Damian had never seen me like this. Shock and confusion flickered across his face for a split second.

I lunged forward, scrabbling desperately to gather the ash off the floor.

Big, heavy tears splashed down, mixing with the ash, and I couldn’t get it all back no matter how hard I tried.

“I’m sorry, Mom. I’m so sorry…”

“Scarlett.”

When he saw how broken I was, Damian stepped forward to grab me.

“Get away from me!” I shoved him as hard as I could. “I hate you. Don’t touch me. I hate you!”

He stumbled back a step, staring at me like he couldn’t believe what I’d just done.

“Damian, are you okay?”

Serena hurried to catch him. “Mrs. Moretti, you made a fool of yourself out there already, and now you dare talk back to the Don of this family?

“Don’t you forget it—everything you have right now, the Moretti family gave it to you! If it weren’t for Damian, you’d never have this good life!”

“Good life?” I clutched the shards of the urn, slumped on the floor, and suddenly I grinned.

My smile was desperate, twisted.

This “good life”—walking on eggshells every single day, too weak to even protect my own mom?

I never wanted it again.

Good thing it was all over. From now on… I had nothing left to lose. I never had to grovel like a goddamn dog ever again.

I swore I’d take down the entire Moretti family. I’d avenge my parents.

Loyalty?

Someone like Damian didn’t deserve a single drop of my loyalty.

I pulled out my phone, sent a single text, and showed that broken smile to Damian and Serena.

“Come to hell with me.”
