The Don’s Forgotten Wife Took Down His Empire Chapter 01

The Don’s Forgotten Wife Took Down His Empire Chapter 01

Every woman in New York said Damian Moretti was a hopeless romantic, and that he’d spoiled me rotten as the envy of all—Mrs. Moretti.

Only I knew how hard the days behind that were.

Day after day, I numbly watched him bring home one woman after another, until he fell for a head housekeeper and set down rules for the entire Moretti household.

Not only did he cut off all my cards and toss out my clothes and bags, but he also limited me to 50 bucks a day for groceries and forbade me from leaving the house after eight.

Even when the hospital called with a critical condition notice at one minute past eight, she still had the soldiers stop me at the door.

I pleaded desperately, “My mom had a heart attack. I have to get to the hospital right now.”

Serena didn’t budge. “Mrs. Moretti, the house rules say no leaving after eight. Even if your mom dies, that’s the rule.”

I shook with rage, turned around, and found the family Don, Damian, begging him to let me go.

But he just looked indifferent. “As long as you’re Mrs. Moretti, you don’t break Serena’s rules.”

Staring at the man I’d loved for ten years, I felt like I didn’t know him anymore.

Fine. If that was how it was, I didn’t want to be Mrs. Moretti anymore.

The front door was blocked solid by soldiers.

My legs went weak with panic. With trembling hands, I dialed the hospital.

“Please, just start treating my mom. I’ll get there as soon as I can.”

“But—”

Before I could hear what they said, a hand slapped the phone out of my grip.

“Moretti house rule—no loud talking inside!”

The phone hit the floor, shattered into pieces, the screen dead.

I clutched the broken phone, tears streaming down.

“Who are you making that ugly face for? You don’t like my rules?”

Serena rolled her eyes, pouted, and pretended to leave.

“If your wife doesn’t want me here, I’ll just go.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

Damian pulled her into his arms and kissed her cheek. “My little warden, who in the Moretti house dares disobey you?”

Then he grabbed my chin with one hand, his voice cold. “Scarlett, smile.”

Still worried about my mom, I didn’t dare anger him. I forced an ugly smile.

“My mom’s in bad shape, Damian. Just let me see her.

“She saved your life last year in that car accident. You can’t just abandon her…”

Damian’s face softened, a flicker of guilt in his eyes.

He looked at Serena, careful. “Little princess, just this once?”

“No!”

Serena yanked herself free and crossed her arms on the couch.

“It’s just a flare-up, not like she died. Don’t make a big deal out of nothing.

“When you brought me here, you said everyone in the Moretti house answers to me!

“I don’t care. If you let her break the rules, you’re not touching me tonight!”

“Fine, fine, I can’t win with you…”

Damian shook his head helplessly, scooped her up, and sat her on his lap. “Okay, whatever you say. You’re the boss of this house.”

He turned to soothe me. “Don’t worry. The hospital has doctors. Your mom will be fine.”

Serena giggled, shooting me a look full of triumph.

Bringing his lover into the house, stomping my face as the legal wife into the dirt—I’d lost count of how many times this scene had played out in the Moretti home.

Seeing the pity in the servants’ eyes, a wave of hopeless despair washed over me.

I clenched my fists and gathered my courage. “Damian, let’s get a divorce.”

If I wasn’t Mrs. Moretti anymore, I could leave.
