The Comments Told Me I Was Carrying His Only Heirs Chapter 08

We went to a high-end BBQ joint nearby that had amazing reviews.

I ordered a platter with a side of their special spicy Cajun sauce.

Josiah didn’t seem particularly interested in heavy comfort food, picking at his plate only occasionally.

I, on the other hand, had my appetite completely unlocked by the rich, smoky flavors and started eating happily.

Maybe it was because the sudden kick of spice caught them off guard, but one of the little guys suddenly gave me a sharp kick from the inside.

I gasped out loud from the sudden sensation, “Ah!”

Josiah bolted upright in his seat, instantly tense, “What’s wrong?”

I shook my head, my eyes lighting up with excitement, “Nothing. I think it was the baby moving!”

It was the first clear fetal movement I had felt.

Josiah looked equally astonished. “The baby moving?”

I nodded confidently, “Yes! They… they seem to be getting really active in there!”

The little kicks just kept coming.

Josiah stared down at my belly, his face perfectly composed, but his eyes were burning with a deep, intense longing.

Without thinking it through, the words just slipped out of my mouth, “Do you want to feel?”

Josiah snapped his head up, looking at me in utter surprise.

I instantly realized how incredibly intimate that sounded and opened my mouth to apologize, but Josiah spoke first, “May I?”

The apology died in my throat, and I gave him a warm smile, “Of course!”

I wanted nothing more than for him to bond with the babies.

After all, the more attached he became to them, the better their future would be.

Josiah walked over, knelt beside my chair, and very gently placed his right hand against my belly.

The little one came through—right where his hand rested, it kicked several times with gusto.

It didn’t hurt, but the movement was very noticeable.

A look of restrained excitement washed over Josiah’s usually stoic face, “They’re quite mischievous.”

I nodded. “A little.”

Josiah stood back up, his expression deeply earnest, “Thank you for going through this.”

I had to admit Josiah was truly a decent man.

If only he…

Never mind. It was naive to dwell on what-ifs.
