The Bullet Screen Says He Loves Me, But I Can’t Feel It Chapter 08

Adrian wrapped an arm around my waist and guided me one step back.

Gavin stared at Adrian’s hand.

“Let go of her.”

Adrian gave him an amused look. “What did you say?”

“I said let go of her!” Gavin suddenly lunged forward and reached to knock Adrian’s hand away.

Gavin swore and threw a punch at Adrian’s face.

Adrian immediately punched him back.

The final result, of course?

The police station.

They were both bruised and bloody, and the incident was classified as mutual combat.

Sienna hurried to buy a bottle of ice water and tried to press it to Gavin’s face.

Gavin impatiently pushed her away and turned to me.

“Willa, come here.”

Adrian instinctively stepped forward and stood between us.

Gavin looked at me with bloodshot eyes.

“Willa, how long are you planning to keep this up?”

I almost laughed.

I’d originally had no intention of engaging with him. We’d broken up, and I thought we should make a clean break and leave it at that.

But it seemed Gavin didn’t see it that way.

I pushed Adrian aside and looked calmly at Gavin. “What exactly do you think I’m doing?”

Don’t you remember? We broke up.

“You said it yourself, a month ago.”

Gavin went pale.

“I…”

I continued, “Not only did we break up, but I quit.”

“And honestly, when you threw me out of Crosswell, we didn’t exactly part on good terms.”

“Gavin, I gave you everything I had for eight years. I never did anything to deserve this from you.”

“From now on, can we just pretend we don’t know each other?”

I didn’t regret meeting Gavin eight years ago.

Still, I couldn’t help feeling I’d gotten nothing in return.

Not for the eight years I’d given him.

Gavin shook his head hard.

“Willa? What are you saying? You really want to break up with me?”

“Have you fallen for someone else?”

His gaze shifted to Adrian, and a cold smile slowly spread across his face.

“I knew there had to be a reason you suddenly wanted to quit and break up with me.”

“So you already had someone else lined up?”

“Willa? You think Adrian is me? Who else would want a woman who almost got assaulted by a homeless man? You…”

Shock ripped through me. I raised my hand and slapped him hard across the face.

I knew Gavin was a bastard.

I knew he might not love me as much as he used to.

But I’d never once doubted his character.

He was kind to the elderly and generous with charity. If he saw a dog hit by a car, he’d even stop and take it to an animal hospital.

He was loyal to his friends. He was…

I had never imagined he could do this to me.

When Gavin was eighteen, his mother died and he fell apart. I went to find him at a bar in the middle of the night. On the way home, a stranger nearly dragged me into an alley.

Gavin was the one who saved me.

That night, he held me and begged me never to leave him.

I’d stayed by his side for eight years because of those words.

And now the memory I’d treasured for eight years had become a weapon he used to humiliate me.

In that moment, I understood with absolute clarity—

Those eight years really had been wasted.

Gavin seemed to realize what he’d said. His face went paler and paler.

“Willa, I—I didn’t mean it that way.”

“Willa, I’m a piece of shit. I swear I didn’t mean it. I just—I just…”

Gavin tried to explain, but he couldn’t find anything that made sense.

Even the comments that always defended him paused.

[How could he use something like that against Willa? She was going to find him that night.]

[I always thought Gavin was just all bark, that he still loved her underneath it all. But how could someone who truly loved her use her most painful experience to humiliate her?]

[That’s not him saying the opposite of what he means. He’s just cruel.]

I gave Gavin one cold look and didn’t want to say another word to him.

“Let’s go.”

On the way back, Adrian didn’t ask questions. He only drove me to my apartment.

That night, he texted to ask whether I wanted to take a day off.

I replied: [No.]

Then I opened my contacts and found Gavin’s name.

Block.

Eight years together ended right there.

He would never be able to affect me again.
