I hired movers and moved into an apartment closer to Shaw & Sterling that same day.

For the next month, I worked with my new team on the Westbridge proposal.

Adrian became our most reliable support system. Whenever we worked late, the conference room always had coffee and hot food waiting.

My coworkers said he’d changed.

He hadn’t been like this before. He’d been cold, practically untouchable.

Now he kept showing up at the office and had somehow become everyone’s caretaker.

Luckily, our newly formed team went toe-to-toe with the company’s top team and tied them in our very first month.

It was a promising start.

That night, Adrian took everyone to a new restaurant in SoHo to celebrate.

It happened to be a coworker’s birthday. I carried the cake inside while Adrian went to park the car.

Before I reached the entrance, someone stopped me.

It was Sienna and Gavin.

“Willa?”

Sienna looked at the cake in my hands and gave me a knowing smile.

“I wondered how long you could keep it up. What happened? Couldn’t stand it anymore, so you finally came running back?”

“Move. You’re blocking the door.”

I gave them both a cold look and moved to go inside.

But Gavin reached for the cake.

“All right. Since you chose to show up today, stop making a scene.”

“Have dinner with us tonight.”

A month later, I realized, to my surprise, that seeing him again left me completely numb.

Someone once said it took only seven days to change a habit.

After a month of working day and night, I’d really broken my habit of following Gavin around.

Seeing him with Sienna didn’t make me feel a thing.

He had simply misunderstood something.

I avoided Gavin’s outstretched hand. “This isn’t for you.”

Gavin frowned.

“Willa, stop it.”

He reached for the cake again.
