The Bullet Screen Says He Loves Me, But I Can’t Feel It Chapter 09

After the day at the police station, Gavin somehow found my new address and began manufacturing run-ins.

I had my lawyer send him a formal warning before he finally backed off.

After that, he tried a different approach.

Whenever I joined a bid, he showed up with Crosswell. Sometimes, after competing all the way to the end, he’d voluntarily withdraw and claim it was a “gift” for me.

I accepted every one.

By the time Gavin realized what was happening, I’d taken nearly thirty percent of his company’s accounts.

Next, I recruited quite a few people away from Gavin’s company.

Sienna’s promotion had never been popular in the first place.

After I left, Sienna started treating Gavin like he belonged to her.

She made life difficult for a lot of the women at the company.

Once I started making offers, plenty of them jumped ship to my firm.

And through all of it, Gavin kept playing the devoted ex.

He said that if I came back, he could fire Sienna too.

I didn’t respond.

He took my silence as hope.

Of course, Sienna wasn’t going to leave quietly.

Before the company deactivated her account, she posted her and Gavin’s messages in Crosswell’s internal group chat and publicly admitted that she and Gavin had slept together during a business trip.

The messages were deleted quickly.

But screenshots had already spread throughout the industry.

Gavin and Sienna tore into each other. Crosswell descended into chaos and lost several clients when their contracts came up for renewal.

By then, I’d taken time off from work and gone traveling through the Pacific Northwest.

I had no interest in watching Gavin and Sienna tear each other apart.

While his company was in chaos, Adrian took another twenty percent of his accounts.

After that, most of Gavin’s business belonged to us.

By the time I returned from my trip, a month had passed.

The moment I reached my door, I found Gavin blocking the entrance.

He looked as if he’d aged ten years overnight. His once perfectly tailored suit now hung loosely on him.

When he saw me, he instinctively took two steps forward, then stopped himself.

“Willa.”

I looked at him without expression.

Tears rolled down Gavin’s face.

“You know I love you.”

“You know that after eight years, I got used to having you beside me.”

“I was a bastard. I took your love and patience for granted.”

“I used your love as an excuse to hurt you, provoke you, and even throw you out of the company.”

“Willa, for the sake of the past eight years, can you forgive me?”

I’d waited eight years to hear that apology.

But when I finally heard it, I felt nothing.

“I heard your apology.”

“But I won’t forgive you, and I won’t go back.”

“If we meet again, let’s pretend we don’t know each other.”

Gavin’s tears finally spilled over.

“Willa, is there really no chance for us?”

“No.”

I gently closed the door.

Everything worth keeping and everything that wasn’t was behind me now.

There was no going back.

But I knew one thing.

Gavin would not be part of my future.

Lost in thought, I heard my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Adrian.

[Are you coming down? I saved us a table at the restaurant.]

I smiled and replied: [Coming.]

Oh, right. I forgot to mention something.

Adrian had been traveling with me for the past month.

I thought about it.

My career. And him.

That was the life waiting for me.
