The Bullet Comments Called Me Stupid And Doomed Chapter 04

Reading that just made me cry harder.

I’d cried myself numb when I felt the mattress dip behind me. I shot up, heart hammering — and there was Julian, sitting on the edge of the bed. I had no idea when he’d come back.

He was looking at me with something in his eyes I couldn’t name.

I scrubbed my face with my sleeve, scowling. “What are you doing?!”

He’d nearly given me a heart attack.

Julian held my gaze for a beat. Then, without warning, he pulled me into his arms. His voice came out rough, quiet.

“I’m sorry.”

I stiffened in his arms. I knew what he meant. Not sorry for the fight. Sorry that he’d promised me a good life and failed to deliver.

But life had ups and downs — everyone knew that. Was I shocked when I first found out? Of course. It had been a brutal shock.

But I got over it. I always believed he’d come back from this. So no — life wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t unbearable either. And leaving him over money? That never once crossed my mind.

I was crying because he didn’t believe me. And, fine, finding out I was just collateral damage destined to die didn’t exactly help my mood.

He didn’t believe I’d ever gotten that photo. And worse — he didn’t believe I could stand by him through the hard times.

I pressed my face into his shoulder, voice cracking. “You’re wrong about me.”

“I told you — I saw a photo of you with another woman. Why wouldn’t you believe me?”

“Did it never occur to you that someone could’ve hacked my phone and wiped it?”

Julian’s hand moved in slow circles on my back.

“You’re right. That’s on me. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”

I huffed. There was no way he actually believed me, but I knew when to take the win.

After a moment, he spoke again. “If things go the way I’m planning, I can clear the debt in a couple of years. We won’t be rich, but life will be close to what it was.”

I didn’t bother giving some noble little speech about not needing money. I just buried my face deeper into his chest. “Okay,” I said in a muffled voice.

He didn’t say anything else. Just pressed his lips to my forehead. For one second, I could almost pretend he meant it.

We stayed like that, neither of us moving, until he kissed my forehead one more time and pulled back. “I have to go. When I get back, I’m taking you somewhere nice for dinner.”

I nodded.

I walked him to the door, dragging my feet the entire way. “Be safe, okay?”

“Yeah.” He paused, then smiled and ruffled my hair. “Be good. I’ll be home before you know it.”

That smile — real, warm, unguarded — hit me right in the chest. I mumbled something useless and shut the door before he could see my face.

[Okay wait, they’re actually kind of cute together?? The marriage of convenience trope is my weakness.]

[What’s there to ship? The ex-wife is dead weight — all looks, no substance. A badass female lead is so much better.]

[Exactly. Give me a badass FL over a pretty little doormat any day.]

I rolled my eyes. Right, right, right.

Oh sure, she’s a badass female lead. So badass that her big move is stealing someone else’s husband.
