The Body Swap That Made Her a Billionaire—and Me Awake Chapter 06

The Body Swap That Made Her a Billionaire—and Me Awake Chapter 06

Kayden moved with ruthless efficiency.

Within a week, he’d used the Hatfield family’s far-reaching legitimate business networks and off-the-books

resources to hunt down the backwoods warlock ho’d made the hex.

He chose to act quietly. He drove out after dark with his trusted men and secretly detained the old man

inside an abandoned factory on the outskirts of town.

The rejection the comments mentioned had already begun-spiking fevers, constant nosebleeds, sleepless

nights, and a burning ache in my organs that never stopped.

To spare Kayden worry, I endured silently and swallowed painkillers every day.

Inside the derelict factory, Kayden sat on an empty rusted barrel, twirling a pistol loosely in his grip.

He aimed the gun casually at the scrawny old man kneeling on the concrete floor.

“Talk. How do we break the hex?” Kayden’s voice was ice-cold.

The terrified warlock trembled uncontrollably.

“Spare me, sir! I’d lift it if I could, but this hex simply can’t be broken!”

Kayden’s eyes sharpened. He cocked the gun.

“Wait! I’ll tell you everything!” the old man rambled in panic.

“This soul swap is forbidden magic. Tearing two souls from their bodies defies the natural order.”

“There’s only one way to reverse it.”

“What is it?” Kayden pressed.

The warlock swallowed hard. “Forcing an early reversal causes catastrophic backlash. One soul will shatter

completely under the strain. Only one of the two women will survive.”

Kayden’s grip on the gun tightened. Veins popped out across his knuckles.

Only one survivor?

“What happens if we do nothing?” Kayden gritted out.

“If you do nothing, the souls will fully fuse with their borrowed bodies after three months. Permanently

locked. No way back.”

“Meanwhile, the rejection gets worse every day. Whoever can’t endure it will die before the deadline

Kayden shot to his feet and kicked the barrel flying across the floor.

No matter what, Evelyn was trapped facing near-certain death.

Somehow, word of this leaked out.

A security guard delivering meals gossiped about the conversation in a blind spot outside the cell. Lena

overheard everything.

Down in the private cell, Lena listened closely. After a stunned pause, she burst into wild, hysterical laughter.

“Only one of us gets out alive? Perfect. Absolutely perfect.”

She shuffled across the cramped cell in shackles, her eyes cold and venomous.

“You hear that, Evelyn? Fate’s rooting for me!”

“You always caved and let me have everything as kids. Now it’s your turn to bite it and die so I get the high

life!”

Lena spun around. She spotted a jagged chunk of stone in the corner, lunged for it, and sliced deep into her

own wrist.

Hot blood gushed from the wound. But she felt no pain-only feverish excitement.

Following the occultist’s markings she’d memorized, she dragged her bleeding wrist across the cold concrete floor, tracing an eerie blood rune to force the soul fusion.

The instant the bloody rune took shape, an invisible fist crushed my heart back at the manor.

I coughed up a mouthful of black blood and collapsed onto the floor.

Violent spasms wracked my body. Every bone felt ground to dust. My soul pulled taut in countless

directions.

The agony was unbearable. I gaped my mouth open but couldn’t make a sound. I writhed on the floor like a dying fish.

Blinding golden light exploded overhead. Bright red emergency comments flooded the screen

[CRITICAL ALERT! CRITICAL ALERT!]

[Lena finished the blood rune in the cell! She’s forcing the soul fusion to erase Evelyn’]

[Someone help her! Evelyn’s soul is fading minute by minute!]

[This is so unjust! Why do good people always suffer?]

By the time the staff found me and rushed me to the Hatfield private hospital ICU, my vital signs had

plummeted.

Kayden burst into the ICU in a rage and kicked the door open.

“Get out! All of you, right now!”

He drove out all the doctors and slammed the door shut, locking it from inside.

He ran to my bed, his shaking hands cupping my pale face.

“Evie! Evelyn! Open your eyes! Look at me!”

I struggled to open my eyes. Everything was blurry, but I could still see him-Kayden, who never lost his cool -red-eyed, tears running down his face and falling onto my cheeks.

“It hurts… terribly…” I gasped weakly, blood frothing at my lips with each breath.

“I know. I know,” Kayden gripped my hand tight and pressed it to his cheek.

“I destroyed her blood rune. You’re safe now. You’re going to be okay.”

But I knew I wasn’t.

The ruthless comments delivered my death sentence:

[That blood rune can’t be undone once activated.]

[Evelyn’s soul is fading fast. She has seven days left at most.]

[The only fix is for the caster to lift the hex willingly. No mortal or occult power on earth can undo it)

[But Lena would rather die than let Evelyn live.]

Seven days left.

I looked up at Kayden and used my last bit of strength to hook my pinky around his

“Kayden…” My voice was barely a whisper.

“If I can’t make it… if I stay trapped in this ugly body forever. will you still love me?”

Kayden’s whole body jolted.

No hesitation crossed his face. No disgust. Only overwhelming heartache and love.

He leaned down and brushed his trembling lips against my cold forehead.

“Listen to me, Evelyn Blake.”

“I never fell for a pretty face.”

“I fell for the girl who linked her pinky with mine night after night those three long months.”

“The woman who pulled me out of hell and gave me a second chance at life.”

“Even if you turn into a monster, you’re still going to be my wife. Only mine.”

“I forbid you from dying. Do you hear me? I won’t allow it.”

He pulled me into a crushing embrace, holding me like he wanted to fuse me into his own body.

Wrapped in his warmth, I slowly let my eyes close.

With those words, every hardship of the past three months felt worth it.

Even if I died, I had no regrets.
