The Body Swap That Made Her a Billionaire—and Me Awake Chapter 02

I took Kayden back to my small apartment.

Using Lena’s sixty thousand dollars, I rented a full set of top-tier home medical equipment overnight. Then I emptied almost all my savings to buy expensive imported nutrition and medicine.

I got to work right away—fetching water, giving sponge baths, massaging his muscles, tending to his wounds. Three straight hours of it. By the end, I was drenched in sweat, and my back ached so badly I could barely stand. But I didn’t stop.

Because the comments had told me: he could feel all of it.

[Poor girl, this job is straight-up brutal, no cap.]

[But she’s so meticulous. She even got the dried blood out from under his fingernails!]

[Kayden has a severe mysophobia. He’s probably overwhelmed with gratitude right now!]

I wrung out the cloth and wiped the last of the moisture from his face. With all the grime gone, he was stunning. Sharp brows, a straight nose.

I reached out and brushed his pinky again.

“If you can pick up what I’m saying, give me some small sign, alright?”

Silence.

Then, two seconds later, his eyelashes fluttered hard. His stiff finger moved, ever so slowly, and curled around my pinky, holding tight.

[OH MY GOD, the heir responded!]

[Dude’s normally ice-cold to everyone, but he goes soft only for Evelyn!]

[When you’re trapped in a broken body, the person who pulls you out of the darkness becomes your whole world!]

My heart felt warm. I leaned down and whispered softly, “I’m going to get you better. But I need you to work with me, alright? Don’t worry. I’m not leaving you.”

His finger tightened slightly against mine.

Suddenly, the apartment door slammed open.

Lena stood in the doorway, her nose wrinkled in disgust. “Evelyn, this rat hole of an apartment stinks! What if he kicks the bucket right here and—”

Her voice died.

She was staring at Kayden’s clean face. All the disgust vanished, replaced by blatant admiration and greed. But she quickly hid it behind a nasty sneer.

“A pretty face means nothing. He’s still a useless cripple!” She turned to snap at me. “And what are you fawning all over him for? Trying to seduce a helpless patient, you shameless hussy?”

More comments appeared:

[Lena is pure evil! She’s trying to make Kayden hate his own body before the swap!]

[Her plan: swap bodies with Evelyn, so Kayden wakes up inside Lena’s original body and kills the real Lena for her!]

[She’s using Kayden as her hatchet man to erase her old self!]

When I didn’t answer, Lena scoffed and raised her hand.

“Hello? You gonna answer me or just clam up?”

Her palm hit my cheek hard. Her jagged nail cut the corner of my mouth. I tasted blood.

Before I could even swallow, the man on the bed started seizing violently. The heart monitor let out a loud, sharp alarm. His brow was furrowed in pain, his entire frame thrumming with violent rejection and resistance.

Lena shrieked and stumbled back. “What’s going on with him? Did you dose him with the wrong meds or something?”

Ignoring her, despite the pain shooting down my spine, I turned my back to Lena and hooked my pinky around his shaking finger.

“It’s alright, I’m right beside you.”

Miraculously, the seizing stopped. His brow relaxed. His racing heart on the monitor slowed back to normal. His stiff hand latched onto my pinky even harder than before.

[He completely lost it when he saw Evelyn get hit!]

[His body’s in no shape for that kind of stress. But he’s pushing through the pain to protect her!]

[He’s completely dependent on her now. He can’t stand to see anyone hurt her!]

Lena peeked around me and saw our fingers intertwined. Instead of getting angry, a secret, triumphant smile spread across her face.

“Well, Evelyn, it looks like he’s really attached to you. You’d better hold onto this golden ticket very carefully.”

After Lena left, the room got quiet again. I went back to Kayden’s bedside. His brow was furrowed again, his body tense with insecurity now that we were alone.

I sat down. The second my finger touched his skin, he grabbed onto my pinky like a shipwreck survivor clinging to a life raft. All the tension in his body melted away.

I looked at his pale lips and smiled softly to comfort him.

“Get some rest.”

“I’m sticking around while you sleep.”

“Just give my finger a little tug if you need anything; I’m here for good.”

His breathing hitched for a second.

Then the tip of his pinky rubbed faintly and gently against mine in reply.
