The Billionaire’s Wife Who Couldn’t Afford Anything Chapter 04 The Final Test

I didn’t like Richard Hawthorne, but he was still an elder in the family.

So with Noah in my arms, I followed everyone to the hospital.

What I never expected was that the consequences of his own staged fall would end up being paid for with my son’s blood.

“The patient has a rare blood type,” the doctor said anxiously. “We don’t currently have enough Rh-negative blood in storage.”

He looked toward Adrian.

“Mr. Hawthorne, your blood type isn’t compatible. But your son is also Rh-negative. We can draw a little from him for emergency use.”

I immediately pulled Noah behind me.

“No!”

My voice echoed through the hallway.

“He’s too young. He can’t donate blood!”

Adrian instantly lost his temper.

“Then what do you expect me to do?” he shouted.

“My father is lying in the ER right now. Am I supposed to just watch him die?

“It’s only a little blood. Nothing’s going to happen!

“He’s my biological son,

too!”

I snatched the consent form from the nurse’s hands and rolled up my sleeve.

“Rh-negative blood, right?”

“I have it too.”

I looked coldly toward the operating room.

“If Mr. Hawthorne’s life is really on the line, then surely nobody still thinks a poor woman’s blood is dirty.”

The nurse hesitated briefly before nodding.

That meant my blood would work.

I held Noah’s hand tightly and followed the nurse into the donation room.

When the needle pierced my skin, I barely felt any pain.

The only thing I cared about was tightening my grip around Noah’s fingers.

No matter what happened—

I would protect my son.

After the first 400cc bag filled up, dizziness hit me so hard that the room started spinning.

Noah stood beside me, crying uncontrollably, watching my blood slowly leave my body through the tubing.

I thought it was finally over.

But a few minutes later, the nurse rushed back in again.

“There’s excessive bleeding during surgery.

“It’s not enough.

“We need another 400cc.”

My face immediately went cold.

“Take mine. But don’t touch my son.”

Another bag started filling.

Cold sweat slowly slid down my forehead, and my body began trembling uncontrollably.

Noah panicked completely.

Crying hysterically, he grabbed the nurse’s sleeve.

“Stop taking Mommy’s blood!

“Take mine instead!

“I’ll save Grandpa! Just stop bullying my mommy!”

Adrian stepped forward worriedly and held my shoulder.

I shoved his hand away immediately.

Then I watched the nurse prepare a third blood bag.

And still, I didn’t refuse.

I gently touched Noah’s hair. My voice had become so weak that it barely sounded human

anymore.

“Mommy’s okay.

“Noah, go wait outside for me.”

He shook his head desperately.

He didn’t understand why they still needed more blood.

The third bag.

It was already the third bag.

Noah could only helplessly tug on Adrian’s sleeve while sobbing.

“Dad, stop hurting Mommy…

“She’ll die. She really will die…”

He was right.

At this point, the amount of blood they’d taken could absolutely send someone into shock.

It could become life-threatening.

But Adrian still didn’t stop them.

He only looked at me with concern in his eyes, as though worrying about me somehow made all of this acceptable.

Noah became even more frantic.

In his panic, the words slipped out without thinking.

“Stop taking her blood!

“I don’t want Grandpa anymore!

“I only want Mommy!”

A cold expression instantly appeared on Adrian’s face.

He grabbed Noah and shoved him harshly backward.

“Noah Hawthorne, how could you say something like that about your grandfather?”

Noah fell hard onto the floor.

I immediately grabbed the nearest pen and threw it at Adrian with all the strength I had left.

“Touch my son again and see what happens!”

My entire body was shaking violently now.

Noah looked unbelievably wronged, but he didn’t even dare cry loudly anymore.

He quietly climbed back up, walked to my side, held my hand tightly, and cried silently beside

“You’re all bullying Mommy and me…”

Those words finally seemed to stab into Adrian’s chest.

For the first time, guilt appeared on his face.

He slowly reached toward Noah, clearly wanting to apologize.

But Noah immediately dodged him and buried himself deeper against me instead.

I wanted to comfort him.

I really did.

But the darkness in front of my eyes kept spreading wider and wider until eventually, everything went black.

When I woke up again, all I could see was the white hospital ceiling above me.

And beside my bed sat Noah alone.

His eyes were swollen from crying. The moment he saw me awake, he immediately grabbed my hand tightly.

“Mommy…

“Let’s leave.”

His voice broke completely.

“I don’t want Dad anymore.

“I don’t want Grandpa anymore either.

“I only want Mommy.”

I couldn’t even describe what I felt in that moment.

It was like something inside me had finally emptied out completely.

As though the last tiny trace of love I still had for Adrian had been drained away together with my blood.

I lowered my head and gently kissed Noah’s forehead.

“Okay,” I whispered softly.

“Mommy will take you home.

“Back to Cedar Hollow.”

Without hesitation, I ripped the IV from my arm, took Noah’s hand, and walked straight out of the hospital.

I didn’t even want the few belongings I still had at Hawthorne Manor

anymore.

At the train station, I led Noah through security and waited quietly on the platform for the train.

Right before boarding, my phone suddenly vibrated.

Two text messages appeared on the screen at the exact same time.

Adrian:

“The blood donation was the final test.

“Evie, I believe you now. I finally know you’re not a gold digger.”

Richard Hawthorne:

“I never actually fell.

“Congratulations on passing the test.

“I officially accept you as my daughter-in-law now.”
