The Billionaire’s Wife Who Couldn’t Afford Anything Chapter 05

The Billionaire’s Wife Who Couldn’t Afford Anything Chapter 05 She Was Never After His Money

I let out a quiet, mocking laugh.

Then I blocked and deleted both of their numbers in one smooth motion.

After that, I took Noah’s hand and boarded the train without looking back.

Inside the private hospital suite on the top floor, Richard Hawthorne had only been pretending to fall, but at his age, even staging an accident left him sore enough that the doctors insisted he stay overnight for observation.

After sending those messages, he glanced toward the window.

Adrian Hawthorne stood there absentmindedly holding his phone, clearly distracted.

Richard sighed.

“I know you’re angry that I hid the third blood bag from you.

“But I did all of this for your own good.

“There are too many gold diggers in this world now. Too many people are desperate to climb into the Hawthorne family through you. I only wanted to help you see clearly.”

His tone softened slightly.

“But now I’m certain.

“Evie really is a good girl.

“From now on, the two of you should live properly together and raise Noah well.”

The moment he finished speaking, hurried footsteps suddenly echoed down the hallway outside.

The housekeeper stumbled into the room carrying a thermos, panting so hard she could barely stand upright.

“T-They’re gone!

“Mrs. Hawthorne and the young master are both gone!”

Adrian immediately turned and ran out.

Even Richard Hawthorne’s expression changed completely.

He quickly pushed himself upright and ordered the housekeeper to help him downstairs.

The hospital room was empty.

Completely empty.

The only evidence that I had ever been there at all was the discarded IV needle lying on the bed and the two dark-red drops of blood staining the sheets.

Richard froze.

“She left before even finishing the IV?

“This…”

Adrian instantly pulled out his phone and tried contacting me.

A bright red exclamation mark appeared beside the message.

Blocked.

His breathing visibly stalled for a second.

Then he immediately grabbed Richard’s phone and tried again.

Another red exclamation mark.

Richard finally started panicking, too.

“Don’t worry,” he said quickly, trying to comfort his son. “Evie probably found out the truth and got angry.

“Just go find her.

“She’s a woman. Buy her something expensive, coax her a little, and everything will calm down.

“You’re the wealthiest man in Newford City. Do you really think she’d be willing to leave you?”

His mouth kept moving, but Adrian couldn’t hear a single word anymore.

An unfamiliar panic had already wrapped tightly around his chest.

He stared at the bloodstains on the hospital bed and muttered hoarsely:

“Dad… if she really doesn’t care about money, then no amount of money will bring her back.

“But if she does care about money…”

He paused.

“Then she wouldn’t be Evelyn anymore.”

Richard didn’t hear him clearly.

By the time he was about to ask what Adrian meant, Adrian had already rushed out of the hospital.

The first place he went was the delivery sorting center where I used to work.

The moment he stepped out of his air-conditioned luxury car, the scorching heat slammed into him so hard he almost lost his balance.

Sweat instantly formed across his forehead.

After staring at the massive warehouse for a long moment, he finally walked toward the security booth at the entrance.

“Excuse me,” he asked politely, “is this the FedEx sorting center?

“Does Evelyn work here?

The elderly security guard leaned out the window and sized Adrian up from head to toe.

“What are you to Little Evelyn?

“What do you want with her?”

Adrian hesitated briefly before answering:

“I’m her husband.

“We had an argument recently, so she left home…”

Before he could even finish speaking, an apple core suddenly flew straight out of the booth and smacked hard against his chest.

Sticky juice splattered across his expensive shirt.

The old guard leaned out and started cursing immediately.

“Bullshit!

“Who the hell are you fooling?

“Little Evelyn doesn’t have a husband!”

Adrian instantly became flustered.

“I really am her husband!

“I have proof!”

He hurriedly pulled out his phone and started frantically searching through his photos.

Only then did he realize something horrifying: there were barely any pictures of us together.

He didn’t even have a photo of our marriage certificate saved.

After searching for a long time, the only thing he could find was that awkward courthouse selfie we’d taken years ago.

The cheap veil.

My bright smile.

His stiff expression.

His chest suddenly tightened painfully.

Suppressing the bitterness rising in his throat, he handed the phone over.

But the old security guard didn’t even bother looking at it before waving him inside.

“Having a husband like you is worse than having none at all,” the old man grumbled.

“What kind of man lets his young wife suffer in a place like this?”

He pointed toward the warehouse behind him.

“This place works women like men and works men like animals.

“Three whole years, and now you finally remembered to come looking for your wife?

“You heartless bastard.”

The old guard spat on the ground before lazily pointing deeper into the facility.

“Go to the sorting warehouse and find Manager Foster.

“I haven’t seen Little Evelyn in two days either. Ask him if he knows anything.”

At first, being cursed out by a stranger had made Adrian furious.

But the moment he actually stepped inside the sorting center, he finally understood.

The life I had been living all this time…

had truly been brutal.
