The Alpha Willfully Let His Beta Slay My Wolf Chapter 05

The Alpha Willfully Let His Beta Slay My Wolf Chapter 05

The night I leave Cassian, standing in pouring rain, stretches into eternity.

Eventually, I reach Elder Odric Wayne’s doorstep.

The silver-haired scholar sees me. Soaked. Shivering. Broken. He asks nothing.

He steps aside, waves me in, as he did when I was his star pupil at Shadowmoor Academy.

My throat closes. Tears flood my eyes.

When I abandoned my scholarship for “true love,” he argued fiercely against it.

He boycotted the bonding ceremony, sending only a cold text.

“Seraphine, leaning on an Alpha’s mercy may mend your wolf, but it hollows your soul.”

“In this cruel world, the hand forever outstretched returns empty. You will spend your life kneeling, begging.”

Elder Odric was right.

At first, Cassian boasted of my scholarship at pack dinners, parading me as his “brilliant Luna.”

Then Vera arrived.

She whispered that my academic roots were liabilities in pack politics. That I carried “feral Omega energy” needing polish through etiquette.

Just like that, I became a pet requiring “refinement.”

I groveled for every cent while he offered it with pity. Scraps to a stray.

By the time I hold a steaming mug of cocoa, cried dry,

Elder Odric adjusts his spectacles. “I hope you did not forget all you learned at Shadowmoor while playing house with that Alpha.”

“Field research in the north. On Omega wolf spirit resilience. Documenting survival of damaged spirits in isolation. Collecting biomarkers in the wild. Grueling. Filthy. Interested?”

I blink. Braced for scolding. Offered a lifeline.

The elder studies me. “What? Grew comfortable as a trophy wife? Cannot handle researcher’s labor?”

I wipe my face. For the first time in two years, a genuine smile forms.

“I can do it, Elder Odric. As long as I am no longer that damned Luna, I shall do anything.”

Elder Odric grunts. I catch the corner of his mouth twitching.

“Decided? Wash up. Science waits for no personal crisis. No time for wallowing.”

Under his guidance, I join the team within days.

The first week nearly breaks me.

Gradually, buried skills resurface.

Squatting in mud, tracking hormone patterns, running genetic analyses on a battered laptop, something within me flickers alive.

The rugged team lead, Dr. Caine Mathers, claps my shoulder and grins.

“Seraphine, truth? I thought you were here for the scenery. Never expected the former Convengard Luna to have teeth.”

I grin back, smearing mud from my cheek.

“Turns out the only hand you can rely on is your own.”

That night, we huddle around the campfire, trading jokes and wilderness tales,

when a shrill voice cuts through the laughter.

“Well, well. Look who it is. Our Luna.”
