Cassian arrives swiftly.

Alpha speed.

When they care, distance means nothing.

He does not rush back for concern.

He returns because the mind-link is severed.

For a control-driven Alpha, a mate breaking the link without permission is a public slap.

He does not glance at the small duffel at my feet.

He approaches, reeking of Vera’s perfume. A claim of ownership.

“Seraphine, sweetheart.” His thumb brushes my chin.

“Why have you vanished from the link? My wolf cannot feel you. He is frantic.”

I jerk my head away. “I need space.”

His hand drops. He blinks, then drapes an arm over my shoulder.

“Still sulking over the training photo?”

“Seraphine, Vera is my Beta. She serves this pack tirelessly. As Alpha, I ensure my wolves can defend themselves.”

“You request funds often. The council and elders already doubt you.” His breath warms my neck.

“Do not make yourself appear paranoid.”

My stomach turns. I nearly laugh.

This is Cassian’s ritual.

Hand me a honey-coated blade. Feign shock when I bleed.

Watch me swallow the bitterness and thank him.

“Paranoid?” I step back, shaking off his grip.

“Our Alpha is busy with pack affairs. Too busy to see his Beta has become the true Luna.”

Cassian’s smile freezes.

“Seraphine, since when are you so sensitive?”

“Vera is young. Proving herself in a great pack is no easy task. You are Luna. Support her. Ignore gossip.”

“Last time you raged at the council over payment, Vera wept all night. Still, she defended you.”

He looks at me as if I have kicked a pup.

“I give you all you desire. So you may rest without stress. If you target Vera thus, I am disappointed.”

“Your wolf is fragile. Such emotion harms you.”

“Seraphine, trust me. Cease overthinking. Let Vera manage logistics. Focus on healing your wolf.”

I break.

Before him, I grab the duffel’s zipper and yank it open.

“All I desire? A life without stress?”

“Cassian, this is your love?!”

The bag hangs open. Empty.

A few shirts, washed so thin the collars sag like aged skin.

The clothes I packed the night he marked me. Two years past.

“I walk out that door without five decent outfits to my name!”

“In this ‘paradise,’ I file requests for a haircut. Beg your Beta for pity to buy lip balm. The janitor earns more monthly than your Luna!”

Cassian frowns. “Seraphine, do not exaggerate.”

I ignore him. Grab his designer sleeve and drag him to the locked storage room.

Point at the glowing scanner above the knob.

“Go on, loyal Alpha. Tell me how to open this.”

“Password. Fingerprint. Remote approval from our all-controlling Beta!”

“What manner of Luna begs scraps from a Beta and calls it tolerance?!”

Cassian stares at the lock, expression blank.

He turns to me, eyes clouded with confusion. “This is the issue?”

“Babe, you stage this scene, threaten to leave… because accessing funds is inconvenient?”

“Or are you merely jealous Vera holds the seal?”

Something inside me freezes solid.

All my rage, all my grief. In his eyes, a shallow, materialistic mate throwing a fit.

I release his sleeve. Step back twice. My gaze dies.

“Forget it, Cassian. I no longer care.”

“I am severing the bond.”
