The next morning, I took only Sia back to the Sinclair estate.

The manor wasn’t fully packed yet.

I only came to tell my parents. The scroll was signed.

The servants recognized the Thorne car and went in to announce us.

I saw my father, mother, my brother Ronan, and his mate Winnie.

I put the scroll on the table.

My father’s first words,

“When is Cyrus and Lila’s banquet?”

No one asked. Six years of a bond, ending just like that. Was I hurting?

I said,

“I don’t know.”

“I came today to tell you I’ll stay here for a while.”

“And Kane. I won’t agree to it.”

My father’s face dropped.

“Cyrus arranged a new mate for you himself. That’s already giving you a way out.”

“If you refuse, he’s your Alpha. He’ll be displeased.”

Ronan frowned too.

“Cyrus spoke to me yesterday.”

“Once things with Lila settle, he can recommend me to the pack’s core council.”

“If you bond with Kane, everyone’s happy.”

“Do you have to cause trouble?”

Winnie sat beside him, voice low.

“Maeve. Even if you won’t think of yourself, think of your brother.”

I looked at her.

“All you care about is what I can get for you.”

“Did any of you consider what I get?”

My mother avoided my eyes.

“Kane has never had a mate. No messy women.”

“Isn’t bonding with him good?”

“Isn’t a warm den all a female wants in life?”

She paused. Then added,

“Your sister has waited six years.”

“You can’t let her lose Cyrus just because you’re unwilling.”

Footsteps behind the stairs.

Lila walked out.

“Since Maeve won’t take a new mate, then I won’t bond with Cyrus either.”

My mother stood up at once.

“Lila, what are you saying?”

Lila shook her head.

“She just dissolved her bond.”

“Then she says she’ll never take another mate.”

“What will people say about me?”

“They’ll only think I stole her mate and drove her to give up on males forever.”

I stared at her.

“You don’t not want to be Luna.”

“You just don’t want the controversy.”

She walked up to me. Lowered her voice.

“As long as you have no place to belong, Cyrus will always feel he owes you.”

“I don’t want my Alpha spending his whole life wondering how to settle his former Luna.”

My father slammed the table.

“Enough.”

He looked at me.

“You will agree to this. Whether you want to or not.”

I asked,

“And if I don’t?”

“Then you’ll stay here and reflect.”

“When you come to your senses, you come out.”

He had my communication stone taken.

He locked me in the small dark room behind the old Sinclair house.

I turned and walked.

Sia tried to follow. Ronan blocked her.

“Father just wants her to calm down. You’re not going.”

When they locked me in, it was still daylight.

A few hours on my knees.

I thought I could take it.

But after nightfall, cold rain started outside.

The old house was freezing. The floor tiles damp.

Sia came running with a cloak and hot water.

“Her knee was injured before. Let me in.”

Ronan blocked the door.

“Father said if she doesn’t admit she’s wrong, no one goes in.”

Winnie tugged his sleeve.

“It’s freezing out. At least send the cloak in.”

Ronan shook her off.

“If she refuses Kane, my spot on the core council could fall through.”

“Whose side are you on?”

Winnie lowered her head. Stopped talking.

Later, my mother came.

Her hand was already on the lock.

“Maeve. Just nod, and I’ll take you back to your room right now.”

Through the door, I said,

“I won’t.”

My mother stood there a long time.

In the end, she pulled her hand back.

Lila took the cloak from her arms.

“Mother. Let’s go back.”

“If she really can’t take it, she’ll come around.”

Just before dawn, Lila stood outside the door again.

“Maeve. Have you thought it through?”

I braced against the table. Stood up, inch by inch.

“I have.”

“What you’re afraid of isn’t that I won’t take another mate.”

“What you’re really afraid of is that Cyrus still can’t forget these six years.”

I took one step. My knee gave out. I crashed to the floor.

Outside, a beat of silence.

Lila’s hand seemed to reach for the door. Then stopped.

“Tell Father first.”

“Don’t let her fake an illness to get out of this.”
