Six years ago, King Alexander got drunk at a charity gala.

Everyone knew. Cyrus and my sister, Lila, had grown up together.

On the night of the full moon, he completed the ceremony with me.

Calmly, he said,

“But since we are bound, I will protect you, and give you the dignity a Luna deserves.”

For six years, he did exactly that.

When his mother blamed me, he stood in front of me.

When my fever wouldn’t break, he stayed up all night.

I thought six years together would matter more than a short first love.

Cyrus backed the right side.

“Kane is decent,” Cyrus said, sitting across from me.

“He works hard. He’s loyal. A good fit for you.”

I looked down at the file.

After a long moment, I laughed once.

“Since we’re dissolving the bond, we go our separate ways.”

“You and my sister.”

“Where I go, who I’m with, or whether I take another mate—none of it is your business.”

“So why arrange my life for me?”

Cyrus frowned slightly.

“I already spoke with your parents. They agree Kane is suitable.”

“You were with me for six years.”

“I don’t want you to be looked down on after you leave.”

“Kane is my man. If anything happens to you, I can still look out for you.”

So, in the matter of my own life, the only thing that didn’t matter was still me.

I picked up the dagger, cut my palm.

I pressed my handprint onto the dissolution scroll.

Not until the next full moon could he announce a new Luna.

But Cyrus and Lila planned to go public first.

As for me and Kane, he had clearly assumed that once I nodded, we would be settled.

“Alpha is dissolving the bond with you, but you’re his destined mate!”

I handed her the scroll.

Sia looked at the file in my hand.

“And this?”

I was silent for a few seconds.

“Go ask Cyrus to come back.”

He returned quickly.

I pushed Kane’s file back in front of him.

“I agree to dissolve the bond.”

“But I don’t need a new mate.”

“Please tell him that yourself.”

Cyrus stared at the file, his face darkening.

“Maeve. I’ve already decided to start over with Lila.”

“Whether you take a new mate or not won’t change that.”

I looked up at him.

“Do you think that if a woman doesn’t rush to find a new mate, she must still be waiting for her old one to come back?”

His brow tightened. His voice softened.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“Kane is someone I promoted myself. His life is simple.”

“With him, at least you won’t be wronged.”

“I’ll give you seven days. Think it over.”

I asked,

“And if I still refuse after seven days?”

Cyrus was silent for a moment. Then pushed the file back toward me.

“This can’t be canceled immediately.”

“Next week’s banquet—I’ll be introducing Lila’s new role.”

“If you publicly reject Kane now, what will people say about her?”

“Everyone will think she stole her sister’s husband.”

“And forced her sister to give up on mates forever.”

I looked at him.

Suddenly, I didn’t want to say another word.

So even his goodwill was for Lila.

I told Sia to bring the property list.

Six years of bonding. What I brought in. What Cyrus gave me later.

I sorted it piece by piece.

Tomorrow, after I explained things to the Sinclair family, I planned to move out.

Cyrus had already reached the door.

When he saw me set aside the jewelry and collection lists he’d given me, he stopped.

“These were always yours. There’s no need to separate them so clearly.”

Sia pulled a moonstone from the bottom of the safe.

Six years ago, Cyrus had been sent to clear the Dark Forest border.

They were ambushed by hunters.

I went with the healers.

I took a blow meant for him from an infiltrating hunter.

The silver dagger stabbed my shoulder.

Every full moon, it still ached.

Later, he infused the moonstone with herbs and gave it to me himself.

I placed the moonstone in front of him.

“Leave this too.”

Cyrus pushed it back into my palm.

“It’s yours.”

I looked at him for a long time.

“The bond can be broken. But the old things, you insist I keep.”

“Cyrus. Do you want me to let go, or do you just not want me to let go too cleanly?”

He didn’t answer.

He only said,

“In seven days, I’ll ask you again.”

I put the moonstone away.

“Fine.”

“In seven days, I’ll give you my answer.”

Only, that answer might not be what he wanted.
