Archer walked over and turned off the television.

“Don’t watch that.”

Laney nodded, then looked back down at her book.

At dusk, they closed the shop and walked hand in hand to the beach.

Laney took off her shoes and stepped onto the cool sand.

The sea breeze washed over them, and she spoke softly.

“Archer, thank you.”

Archer tightened his grip on her hand.

“For what?”

“Thank you for bringing me here.” Laney looked out at the ocean. “And thank you for showing me that I could have a different kind of life.”

Archer gently pulled her into his arms.

“You don’t have to thank me,” he said. “We survived. Together. And now, we’re living.”

Laney leaned against him and said nothing more.

The sky slowly darkened, and the lights of the town began to twinkle.

She looked up at the stars, her heart calm and quiet.

Someone had once told her that she was the only light in his eyes.

Now, words like that didn’t matter to her.

She just wanted to be herself. She just wanted to live the life she had now.

“Let’s go home,” she said to Archer with a smile. “We have to get up early for the flower market tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

They walked slowly along the shoreline, toward home.

Behind them, a line of shallow footprints marked their path, soon to be smoothed away by the rising tide.

The pain and hatred of the past would eventually fade, washed away by the long river of time.

And ahead of them lay an ordinary, real life, and countless tomorrows to be spent hand in hand.
