Silenced Omega Chapter 20

Silenced Omega Chapter 20

After Genevieve was gone, Preston sat alone in the restaurant and downed three glasses of whiskey, one after the other.

As he drank, old memories surfaced, unbidden.

When he was seven, a group of kids shoved him into a mud pit.

A little girl with a high ponytail ran over and stood in front of him, her arms spread wide.

When he was ten, he lay feverish in a storage closet at boarding school during his rut, and no one cared.

It was that same girl who had secretly released her soothing pheromones and left her own blanket for him.

When he was thirteen, a group of older students cornered him in an alley, demanding money.

It was that girl again, charging in with a baseball bat.

She had been terrified, but she still stood in front of him.

Preston suddenly stood up and walked out of the restaurant.

He had to know the truth.

An hour later, he stormed into Camden’s office.

“I have a question for you.” Preston didn’t bother with pleasantries. “What was the relationship between Laney and Genevieve like when they were kids?”

Camden looked up from his work, his expression unreadable.

“Why are you asking about this now?”

“Just answer me.”

Camden thought for a moment.

“Genevieve’s health was always poor, so the family doted on her. Laney was the older sister; she gave way to Genevieve in everything. Whatever Genevieve wanted, Laney gave her.”

Preston pressed on.

“So Genevieve was always the one being protected? She never protected anyone else?”

Camden let out a faint laugh.

“Genevieve was so fragile. How could she protect anyone? It was always the other way around. What are you getting at, Preston?”
