She Was Five Months Pregnant, I Was Three, He Was Hers Chapter 06

Odessa stared at Mrs. Bellamy from the hospital bed as if she’d just been struck by lightning.

“Mrs. Bellamy…”

Her voice shook badly.

“Did you just say you’d never let me be part of the Bellamy family?”

Mrs. Larkin rushed up to Mrs. Bellamy too, her eyes red with anger.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You were the one who promised that once Odessa had the baby, Thayer would marry her.”

“Now the baby is gone, and suddenly your family wants to pretend none of that ever happened?”

Mrs. Bellamy frowned.

“I was only trying to reassure her.”

“She was carrying Thayer’s baby. I couldn’t exactly upset her while she was pregnant.”

Mrs. Larkin trembled with rage.

“My daughter gave your son two years of her life in good faith. She was five months pregnant, and now you’re brushing it all off as something you only said to keep her calm?”

A flash of impatience crossed Mrs. Bellamy’s face.

“In good faith?”

She gave a cold laugh.

“When she started interning at Thayer’s company, are you telling me she had no idea he was married?”

Tears immediately filled Odessa’s eyes.

“I didn’t know!”

She struggled to sit up.

“Thayer never told me he was married.”

“He took me to company events. He introduced me to his friends. He brought me to his parents‘ house for

dinner.”

“Not one person ever told me he had a wife!”

“Odessa, you just had surgery,” Thayer said quietly. “Don’t get worked up.”

She turned to him, pain and hatred filling her eyes.

“So she really is your wife?”

Thayer said nothing.

Odessa broke down.

“You lied to me!”

“Thayer Bellamy, you lied to me for two years!”

Mrs. Larkin’s eyes turned red as well. She hurried over and wrapped her arms around her daughter.

“Oh, sweetheart…”

Mrs. Bellamy remained cold.

“What are you crying for? Things ended up like this because everyone made mistakes.”

“Your daughter was a young intern letting her boss stay late helping her with work and drive her home night

after night. You’re telling me she never once thought there might be something wrong with that?”

Mrs. Larkin whipped around.

“That’s bullshit!”

“Your son was the one who hid the fact that he was married and lied to my daughter!”

Mrs. Bellamy lost her temper too.

“And your daughter didn’t go after him because he had money and a successful career?”

“If she was really so innocent, would she have gotten pregnant by a man she wasn’t married to?”

The hospital room erupted.

Mrs. Larkin lunged at Mrs. Bellamy, reaching for her face. Mrs. Bellamy fought back just as fiercely.

The two women grabbed at each other’s hair and clothes while relatives and nurses rushed in to pull them

apart.

Odessa lay on the bed sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

Thayer stood in the middle of it all, his face ashen, as if he had finally realized what kind of disaster he had

created with his own hands.

My mother took my hand.

“Maren, let’s go.”

I nodded.

But Mrs. Bellamy suddenly broke free from the people around her and hurried over to me.

“Maren, wait.”

She reached for me, but my mother slapped her hand away.

Mrs. Bellamy’s eyes were red.

“I know I’ve handled some things badly, but you can’t throw away your marriage because of Odessa.”

“Odessa lost the baby. She isn’t a threat to your marriage anymore.”

“You’re pregnant now. Have the baby, stay Thayer’s wife, and he’ll come back to you.”

I looked at her, sick to my stomach.

“So that’s all my marriage is to you. A position.”

“Whoever has his child gets to keep her place.”

Mrs. Bellamy went pale.

“That’s not what I meant.”

My voice was quiet.

“You knew Thayer was cheating on me. You knew Odessa was pregnant, and you still helped him hide it from

me.”

“Now that Odessa’s baby is gone, you want me to have mine so you can still get the grandchild you want.”

“What do the women in Thayer’s life mean to you?”

Mrs. Bellamy had no answer.

Then Thayer suddenly spoke.

“Maren, I’m sorry.”

His eyes were red, his voice hoarse.

“I never thought things would turn out like this.”

“Maren, give me one more chance.”

He stepped toward me.

“This is our baby. Let’s have the baby, okay?”

There had been a time when I’d wanted that from him.

I had imagined Thayer pressing his ear to my stomach, awkwardly asking if the baby had been good that

day.

But now, all of it felt ruined.

I looked at him and spoke slowly.

“I’m still divorcing you.”

“And as for the baby…”

Thayer’s face went deathly pale.

I finished calmly.

“I’m getting an abortion too.”
