She Was Five Months Pregnant, I Was Three, He Was Hers Chapter 07

Thayer stared at me, disbelief filling his eyes.

“No.”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Maren, that’s our baby.”

I looked at him.

“So you do remember it’s our baby?”

“Did you think about that when you went to Odessa’s prenatal appointments?”

“Did

you think about it when you lied and told me you were overseas on business?”

“And when you blamed me for Odessa losing her baby, did you remember that I was pregnant too?”

Thayer’s face went white. His lips moved, but no words came out.

My mother tightened her grip on my hand.

“Maren, let’s go.”

This time, no one stopped us.

We had almost reached the end of the hallway when Thayer came after me.

His steps were unsteady, as if all the strength had drained out of him.

“Maren.”

I stopped.

Then, without warning, he dropped to his knees in front of me.

The hallway was still crowded. Nurses, patients, and their families all turned to stare.

Thayer didn’t seem to care anymore.

He looked up at me, his eyes red.

“I was wrong.”

“Hit me. Yell at me. Do whatever you want. Just don’t divorce me, and don’t get rid of the baby”

“I’ll end things with Odessa completely. I’ll fire her from the company. I’ll deal with my mother too.”

“From now on, I’ll be there for you. Just you. Okay?”

I looked at the man kneeling in front of me.

Once, I had believed Thayer Bellamy was the one person in this world who would never let me down.

During our senior year of high school, I once had such a bad stomachache that he snuck off campus to buy

me medicine. The vice principal caught him, and he spent the rest of the day in detention.

When we went to colleges in different states, he once took an overnight bus just to see me. He arrived

outside my dorm in the middle of the night with a cup of hot chocolate for me.

When he first started his company and couldn’t afford an office, we worked side by side in our cramped

apartment.

That winter, the heat barely worked. He gave me the only heating pad we had while his own hands turned red

from the cold, still insisting he was fine.

Those memories were real.

So was everything he did to betray me later.

“Thayer,” I said quietly, “two years ago, when my dad had surgery, you told me your company was in the

middle of a critical funding round and you couldn’t get away.”

“But that same night, Odessa had a fever, and you stayed outside her place until morning.”

“Do you know my mother sat outside the operating room alone, terrified and crying?”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears. She had never known any of this.

I kept my eyes on Thayer.

“Later that year, on our anniversary, you told me you had to fly to Redmont for a business meeting.”

“But you spent that day shopping with Odessa and bought her a necklace.”

“And it wasn’t just that one time. It kept happening. I just trusted you too much.”

I smiled, though my eyes felt painfully dry.

“I kept telling myself we’d been together since we were seventeen, and that what we had was too hard–earned

to give up.”

“I kept telling myself you were just busy.”

“I kept thinking that if I could be a little more understanding, a little more patient, we could still be okay

“But now I know all that understanding did was make you think you could keep hurting me.”

Still on his knees, Thayer finally started to cry.

“Maren, I’m sorry.”

His voice broke.

“I really just… I saw the younger version of you in her.”

My stomach turned.

Somehow, that disgusted me even more than the cheating itself.

I looked at him.

“Thayer Bellamy, don’t insult me.”

“I may have been naive when I was younger, but I would never have gotten involved with a married man.”

Thayer flinched.

I took a step back.

“The next time you see me, it’ll be to finalize the divorce.”

“If you refuse, I’ll file.”

“You cheated on me, lived another life with someone else, got her pregnant, and hid and moved marital

assets behind my back.”

I looked him straight in the eye.

“I’ll fight for every last thing I’m entitled to and leave you with as little as the law allows.”
