I didn’t tell Kyle about any of this.

He was busy with a competition, fingers flying over his keyboard, working on a project.

Even with all that, he still insisted on video calling me.

I sat cross-legged on my bed, doing my skincare in the camera, making small talk.

“Babe, what do you want for your birthday next month?”

“To see you,” I said without thinking.

It’d been a while.

The typing stopped.

He laughed.

“Okay. I’ll book a flight to Seattle right now.”

“Seattle?” someone on his end asked.

I glanced at the screen.

I recognized the voice — Caleb.

“Your girlfriend goes to University of Washington?” he asked.

“Why do you want to know?” Kyle sounded wary.

“My girlfriend goes there too. Just checking if it’s the same school.”

Kyle looked away, went back to typing.

“Oh.”

The others in the dorm got excited.

“Caleb, you’re dating someone? Since when?”

“Both of our department’s heartthrobs are finally taken. Kyle’s been hiding his girl — Caleb, you’ve got to share a photo.”

Caleb smiled.

“Couple weeks ago. Met her in a game. Hit it off.”

“So it was love at first sight. Come on, what does she look like? We’re dying here.”

“She’s shy. No rush. Hey, Kyle, I’m planning to visit my girlfriend next month too. Same flight?”

Kyle stayed indifferent.

“Whatever.”

He paused, then smiled at the camera.

“Babe, I’m getting some water.”

“Okay.”

He took off his headphones and walked off.

I kept doing my skincare.

Suddenly Kyle’s phone tipped forward.

The screen went black.

A couple seconds later, a slender hand picked it up.

The camera showed from his waist to his collarbone — not his face yet.

Kyle snatched it back.

“Don’t touch my stuff.”
