After leaving the estate, I walked the streets for a long time. 

I didn’t know where to go. 

I had already moved out of my apartment, and my things were 

at a friend’s place. 

I was like a ghost, walking along New Veridian’s main streets until my feet went numb. 

My phone rang many times. 

Silas was calling. 

I didn’t answer. 

Eventually, it stopped ringing. 

I sat on a park bench, watching the cars go by. 

My mind was a mess. 

One moment it was Teddy sitting in the corner, the next it was my mother clutching her phone before she died, and then it 

was Silas tucking hair behind Eleanor’s ear. 

My mother waited a lifetime for a middle–aged man mocked 

by his wife. 

I waited three months for “get rid of the baby.” 

A perfect match. 

Like mother, like daughter. 

I spent the night at a hotel. 

The next morning, my phone rang again. 

It was Eleanor. 

“Cassie Vance, is it convenient to meet again?” 

I was silent for a few seconds. 

“Okay.” 

It was the same cafe. 

She was dressed more simply today, in a white cashmere coat, 

her hair down. 

I sat down. 

She looked at me, her gaze different from yesterday. 

No sizing me up, no scrutiny–just looking. 

“About yesterday, I’m sorry.” 

I was stunned. 

She picked up her coffee and took a sip. 

“I investigated you privately, not to humiliate you. I just wanted to see what kind of person could make Silas break his 

own rules.” 

I didn’t speak. 

She set the cup down. 

“Cassie, do you know that Silas has always been 

cold–natured?” 

“We’ve known each other for over twenty years, and he’s never cared for anyone.” 

“So when he suddenly started keeping a girl on the side, we were all curious.” 

“I was especially curious.” 

I looked into her eyes. 

“And now? Have you seen enough?” 

She nodded. 

“I’ve seen enough.” 

“And then?” 

She smiled and took a business card from her bag, pushing it 

toward me. 

“This is my office address. If you want a change of environment, you can come find me.” 

I looked at the card. 

“Miss Montgomery, what does this mean?” 

“It doesn’t mean anything.” 

She stood up, looking down at me. 

“Cassie, Silas and I have an engagement that was set by our 

families a long time ago. I had no choice, and neither did he.” 

“But you have a choice.” 

“Don’t wait any longer.” 

“My mother had no choice either,” I suddenly said. 

She was stunned. 

“My mother waited for Teddy for twenty years. It wasn’t because she wanted to wait; it was because she had no choice.” 

“She was from an ordinary background, had no degree, no 

connections–her only way out was that man.” 

“So she waited. Waited for him to divorce, waited for her 

status to be legitimate, waited for something she would never get in this lifetime.” 

I stood up, looking at her. 

“Miss Montgomery, I’m not like my mother.” 

“I have a choice.” 

She looked at me, a flicker of confusion in her eyes. 

“Then what do you choose?” 

I smiled. 

“I choose to leave.”
