I walked over and stood in front of him. 

He looked up at me, his eyes cloudy. 

“And you are?” 

I didn’t say a word. 

I just looked at him. 

He froze for a few seconds, then his pupils suddenly 

constricted. 

“You look very much like someone.” 

“Like who?” 

He didn’t speak. 

He didn’t dare to say it. 

I gave a small smile. 

“Teddy, right?” 

“I’m Cassie Vance.” 

“My mother was Evelyn Vance.” 

His face turned white instantly. 

The glass slipped from his hand, shattering on the floor. 

The hall went silent for a moment. 

Everyone looked over. 

Silas looked over too. 

When he saw me, he froze completely. 

Eleanor was standing next to him, holding his arm, a faint 

smile on her lips. 

She knew everything. 

She had brought me here specifically to see this. 

To see Teddy’s humiliation. 

To see Silas’s rigidity. 

To see myself standing here, like a joke. 

A server rushed over to clean up the broken glass. 

Teddy stood up, trying to say something, but his lips trembled 

for a long time without making a sound. 

I looked into his eyes. 

Those eyes were completely different from the ones on my mother’s lock screen. 

The photo my mother kept was of him at twenty. 

Dashing and full of promise. 

But the man before me was just a middle–aged man. 

“My mother waited twenty years.” 

“Until the day she died, her lock screen was still a photo of you at twenty.” 

“She said, don’t hate you, that you had your own difficulties.” 

“And my mother has passed away. Her dying wish was to see you.” 

He opened his mouth. 

Not a single word came out. 

I turned to walk out. 

Behind me were whispers. 

“Who is she?” 

“I don’t know, Teddy’s illegitimate daughter?” 

“Doesn’t look like it, since when does Teddy have a daughter 

that old?” 

I reached the door. 

Silas chased after me. 

He grabbed my wrist with so much force it hurt. 

“Cassie Vance!” 

I looked back at him. 

He stood before me, suit disheveled, tie crooked, eyes 

bloodshot. 

“How are you here?” 

“Your fiancée invited me.” 

He was stunned. 

“She wanted me to see what you looked like when you were 

with her.” 

“I’ve seen enough.” 

“Silas, you have such a beautiful smile when you’re with her.” 

His face went pale. 

“Cassie, I-” 

“The baby is gone.” 

I interrupted him. 

He froze. 

“I had the operation yesterday.” 

“The five million is enough, you don’t need to send any 

more.” 

He watched me, his eyes slowly turning red. 

“Why didn’t you tell me?” 

“I did tell you.” 

“You told me to get rid of it.” 

His Adam’s apple bobbed; he wanted to say something but 

couldn’t. 

I pulled my hand away. 

“Silas, I saw Teddy inside just now.” 

“The man my mother waited twenty years for.” 

“He’s old now, hair turning white, left in a corner by his wife, drinking from an empty glass.” 

“If my mother were alive and saw him like that, I wonder if she 

would still wait.” 

I looked at him. 

“Do you think I’ll end up like that too?” 

“Waiting for you to grow old, waiting for Eleanor to stop 

wanting you, waiting for everyone to leave you in a corner?” 

“Will I be like my mother, holding a photo of you at twenty and telling people, ‘he has his own difficulties‘?” 

He didn’t speak. 

I turned and walked into the night. 

This time, he didn’t follow.
