Leaving the cafe, I saw Silas’s car parked at the curb. 

He was leaning against the door, smoking. 

Seeing me come out, he crushed the cigarette and walked over. 

“Cassie Vance.” 

I stopped. 

He stood before me, his eyes bloodshot as if he hadn’t slept. 

“About yesterday, I want to explain.” 

“No need.” 

He was stunned. 

“About the baby.” 

“It’s gone.” 

His Adam’s apple bobbed. 

“I know.” 

“Then what else do you want to say?” 

He looked at me, silent for a long time. 

So long that I thought he wouldn’t speak again. 

Then he opened his mouth: 

“Cassie, do you know why I went to find you?” 

I didn’t say anything. 

“That night at the bar, Jaxson was making things difficult for 

you, and I stepped in.” 

“It wasn’t out of the goodness of my heart.” 

“It was because you look like someone.” 

My heart skipped a beat. 

He looked at me, his gaze very deep. 

“Like my mother.” 

I was stunned. 

“My mother was also a mistress’s daughter.” 

“She followed my father for twenty years, and it wasn’t until I was ten that she finally officially entered the family.” 

“During those twenty years, I was called a bastard, a stray- every word people use on you.” 

He watched me. 

“So the first time I saw you, I knew exactly who you were.” 

“And I hated people like you most of all.” 

“I hated that you were clearly just like me, yet you still put on that pure, high–and–mighty act, acting like you weren’t after money, like you were different from other women.” 

His voice was raspy. 

“So I gambled. Gambled on how long you could keep up the act.” 

“Three months, half a year, a year. When you couldn’t take it anymore, when you finally asked for money, I would have 

won.” 

“I would have beaten that version of myself who was called a bastard as a kid.” 

I stood there, my hands and feet turning ice–cold. 

So that was it. 

From the very beginning, he never intended to love me. 

He was just gambling with himself. 

“And then?” I asked him. 

“Did you win?” 

He didn’t speak. 

“Silas, you won the bet.” 

“I didn’t take your money, I didn’t stay in your villa, and I split 

the rent.” 

“Your victory is complete.” 

He looked at me, his eyes turning red. 

“Cassie, I didn’t win.” 

“That night in the lounge, the things I said they were 

intentional.” 

“I said them to Jaxson and the others on purpose; I said them 

to be cruel.” 

“Because I was afraid.” 

“Afraid that I’d actually fallen for you, afraid that you really were different, afraid that I’d lose.” 

I looked at him. 

“Did you fall for me, then?” 

He didn’t speak. 

I waited a few seconds, then gave a small smile. 

“Forget it, no need to say it.” 

“Silas, you know, my mother told me before she died, ‘don’t hate him, he has his own difficulties.“” 

“I never understood why she would speak for that man.” 

“Now I do.” 

“She wasn’t speaking for him; she was speaking for herself.” 

“She waited a lifetime. If she had to hate him at the end, then 

her entire life truly would have been for nothing.” 

“So she lied to herself–‘he has difficulties,‘ ‘he loves me,‘ ‘he 

will come.“” 

“She wanted peace. Peace with herself.” 

I looked at him. 

“Will I lie to myself too?” 

“Lie to myself saying you fell for me, that you love me, that you’re different?” 

He didn’t speak. 

I turned and left. 

Three days later, I received a package. 

I opened it to find a photo. 

In the photo was Silas as a teenager, standing in front of a run–down tenement building, his gaze defiant and his lip 

bruised. 

On the back, a line was written in pen: 

“Cassie, this is me at ten.” 

“Just like you, people threw stones at me.‘ 

“Later, I learned to throw them at others first.” 

“I’m sorry.” 

I held the photo, looking at it for a long time. 

My phone rang. 

An unknown number. 

“Miss Vance, I am Silas’s mother. Is it convenient to meet?”
