After the gunshot, my body vanished from the window ledge.

My soul, however, drifted upwards, weightless and strangely peaceful.

I watched as Elias lunged toward the window,

half his body leaning out to stare downward.

“Lila!”

His voice scattered in the wind, unanswered.

Behind him, Mia’s soft voice rang out,

“Elias, don’t panic. That gunshot sounded off.”

Elias spun around abruptly, lingering terror still clouding his eyes.

It was an expression I’d rarely seen on him. He was always calm, always in control. Even his betrayal had been delivered with a chilling detachment.

Mia stepped forward, picked up the gun from the floor, and flipped it to show him the barrel,

“Look, it’s a BB gun, not real. Lila must have been trying to scare us.

Her tone was certain, gentle.

Gavin leaned in for a glance, then nodded in realization,

“It really is. I knew it – someone as tough as her would never kill herself.”

“She just didn’t want to hand over the gun, and was scared of the punishment. That’s all. We’ll just go check downstairs for her later.”

Elias stared at the gun. The tension in his shoulders eased a fraction, but his brow remained

furrowed.

Mia took his arm, her voice softening,

“Elias, you can rest easy. You know how badly Lila’s always wanted a baby. She bought this toy gun specifically for our future child. She loves you so much – why would she ever leave you?”

Her words acted like a reassuring thought, snuffing out the last flicker of doubt in Elias’s eyes.

He took a deep breath, his Adam’s apple bobbing, and finally tore his gaze from the window.

Gavin clapped him on the shoulder. “Lila aced her close-quarters combat training. Ten to one she’s sneaking back up the fire escape right now, just waiting for you to come find her and apologize

first.”

They all laughed, the tension lifting instantly.

Mia smiled along, her tone carrying just the right hint of resignation,

“That’s just Lila – she’s been stubborn her whole life. Even when she’s wrong, she needs someone to coddle her. Elias, if you go down now, she’ll just throw another fit.”

Elias fell silent for a long moment, then said,

“Forget it. I’m not going.”

He paused, adding,

“Let her come back on her own.”

After a few seconds of silence, the corners of his lips even curved upward slightly.

He pulled out his phone and sent a voice memo to his assistant. “Order a bouquet of red roses. Have them delivered to the house first thing tomorrow. And pick out a necklace from that brand she liked

last time.”

A beat. Then he added, as an afterthought, “Tie the gift box with a ribbon. She loves unwrapping

presents.”

Floating in mid-air, I listened to his words, feeling absurd.

He was buying me gifts.

He thought I was throwing a tantrum.

He thought a bunch of flowers and a necklace could win me back.

Once, maybe it would have worked. Once, after three days of silent treatment, he’d give me a necklace, and I’d throw myself into his arms in tears, saying, “Don’t do this again.”

But this time was different.

This time, I was really dead.

Mia stood behind him, her gaze flicking toward the window, the corners of her lips lifting slightly.

No one mentioned me again.

No one thought anything could have really happened to me.

Elias finished his last piece of work, rubbed his brows, and was about to speak.

Gavin’s phone suddenly rang sharply.

Everyone looked up at once.

Gavin answered, and a urgent voice came from the other end,

“This is Southside Police Precinct. Is this the Tactical Unit?”

“We’ve received a report – someone jumped from a building outside your headquarters. Please send someone to help confirm the identity.”
