She Has Forty Eight Hours To Live After Her Fiance Admits His Affair Chapter 06

Elias knelt beside me, his fingers hovering a hair’s breadth from my cheek, frozen in that awful

moment of hesitation.

Someone behind him said,

“We should wait for the doctors.”

Gavin spun around and glared, and the man fell silent instantly.

He finally brushed my cheek – cold, rigid.

The face they knew so well.

“Lila!”

Elias shoved Gavin aside, his voice cracking,

“Open your eyes and look at me. I’m here – look at me…

No response.

My eyes were half-open, staring at the night sky above. Tracks of tears stained my cheeks, but the corners of my lips curved slightly.

Elias’s hand slid down my face to my limp one at my side.

As he wrapped his fingers around mine, something rolled out of my palm.

He glanced down.

A ring.

Silver, smudged with blood.

His breath hitched.

He recognized it – the ring he’d made himself with his first paycheck after being assigned to the

field.

He’d ruined over a dozen before getting this one right.

He remembered pressing it into my hand. How I’d wrinkled my nose and called it “hideous,” even as I slid it onto my ring finger. I never took it off. Not once. And now… it had fallen from my lifeless

hand.

He stared at the ring, unblinking.

“Gavin! The doctors are here!”

Several people in white coats rushed over.

Elias shot to his feet, grabbed the lead doctor by the collar, his voice hoarse,

“Save her! She’s pregnant – please save her!”

The doctor knelt, lifted my eyelids, checked my breath, felt for a pulse.

After a few seconds, his hand stopped.

Gavin stared at him fiercely,

“Why did you stop? Keep going!”

The doctor stood, pulling off his mask,

“I’m sorry for your loss. The deceased has no vital signs. Time of death was at least half an hour

ago.”

“Impossible!”

Elias grabbed the doctor’s collar,

“She’s pregnant! You didn’t even check!”

The doctor sighed,

“The deceased had just undergone an abortion. There’s no baby.”

Elias’s hands went limp, slowly releasing the doctor.

He stumbled back, slamming into the flower bed behind him.

He remembered my pale face when I came home from the hospital that afternoon, how I’d walked with a slight hunch, how I’d looked at him and said nothing.

“Impossible…” he muttered, “She wanted a baby so badly…”

No one answered.

Gavin stepped forward to help him,

“Get up first -”

Before his hand touched Elias, he was punched square in the face.

“It’s your fault!”

Elias grabbed Gavin’s collar,

“Upstairs, you said she’d never kill herself! If I’d gone down to find her then -”

Gavin shoved him back, his own eyes blazing. “You believed me? You know her! You’re her husband! Who was it that said to just let her come back on her own?”

They started fighting. People rushed to pull them apart, finally separating the two.

Elias was pinned to the ground, gasping for breath, his eyes fixed on my body nearby.

He said nothing, slowly stood, pushed the others aside, and walked toward me step by step. He knelt again, lifting my body into his arms.

My head rested on his shoulder, blood smearing his collar.

Elias closed his eyes, pressing his face into my hair. A tremor began in his shoulders. It built, a silent, violent quaking that racked his entire frame.

There was no sound. No tears.

Only this awful, wordless convulsion.

Gavin glanced at him, then at Mia standing at the back of the crowd,

“Mia tried to stop you too.”

Elias slowly turned his head toward Mia.

She stood at the edge of the group, her expression stiff.

She opened her mouth,

“Elias, I never thought Lila would really… I thought she was just throwing another tantrum like before…”

Elias stared at her, the redness in his eyes deepening.

In the next second, Mia suddenly clutched her head and screamed, collapsing to the ground,

“My head hurts so much!”
