Seven Years Of Rain Stopped The Day I Signed The Consent Chapter 05

Adrian settled his mother and Chloe at the Whitmore family home.

Chloe clung to his sleeve and refused to let go.

“Adrian, Evelyn sounded so final today. Is she really going to divorce you?”

Adrian tugged his tie loose, visibly irritated.

“She’s just been in a bad mood lately. She’ll get over it in a couple of days. Go to bed. I need to go back and check on her.”

Tears slipped down Chloe’s face.

“Are you blaming me for upsetting Evelyn? Maybe I should just move out and rent my own place.”

In the past, Adrian would have stayed to comfort her.

But tonight, all he could think about was the calm way I had said goodbye before he left.

My voice had been too cold.

So cold that it left him uneasy.

“Stop overthinking it. Just stay here and rest.”

Adrian gave her a distracted answer, grabbed his car keys, and headed out.

He drove straight home and opened the door to find the place completely dark.

“Evelyn?”

No one answered.

He turned on the lights, and as he stepped inside, he noticed that my favorite pair of flats was missing from the shoe cabinet.

Frowning, he walked into the bedroom.

The closet door was half open. Several pieces of clothing were gone. In the guest room that had once been meant to become the nursery, the trash can was filled with baby clothes cut to pieces.

Adrian’s heart skipped hard.

“She actually left?”

He muttered under his breath.

Then he looked down and saw the spare key on the coffee table, along with two documents.

The first was a divorce agreement. I had already signed it, and the division of assets was listed in clean, precise terms.

Adrian let out a cold laugh.

“So we’re doing this again.”

He reached for the second document, assuming it was some kind of property statement or financial paperwork.

The moment his eyes landed on the page, his hand froze in midair.

A D&C consent form.

He stared at the date.

It was the same day he had taken Chloe to the beach and posted, [Storms are scary. Good thing she’s got me.]

Adrian’s mind went completely blank.

All at once, he remembered the three calls I had made to him that day.

He remembered me saying I had had a small procedure.

He remembered the bruise on my wrist from the IV.

He remembered the dark red stain on the sheets.

His legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the carpet in front of the coffee table. The paper crumpled in his grip.

“She was pregnant… Why didn’t she tell me?”

His voice shook, and his eyes turned red.

In a panic, he pulled out his phone and called my number again and again.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each time, the automated voice told him the line was busy.

After several attempts, the line went straight to voicemail. Then it stopped connecting at all.

He had been blocked.

Anger and panic surged through him at the same time.

Just then, his phone rang.

It was a voice message from Chloe.

“Adrian, it’s thundering again outside. I’m scared. Can you come keep me company?”

A wave of nausea rolled through Adrian as he listened to her voice.

He shot to his feet, grabbed his car keys, and rushed out.
